Anyone within commuting distance of NYC, tickets are now on sale:
Russellmania!
July 30 to August 5
Ken Russell in person at all evening screenings!
England’s answer to Fellini will always be regarded as British cinema’s greatest enfant terrible. But at 83 and still going strong, he’s also a British national treasure. In the 1960s and 70s Russell trashed the staid conventions of cinematic good taste, forging a subversive cinema of outrageous excess and mischievous iconoclasm. At time when the British film industry was all but moribund, this fearlessly controversial and flamboyant writer-director pulled off an unmatched nine-film winning streak, which we present for your delectation. Join us for six personal audiences with the legendary Ken Russell, British Cinema’s madcap visionary maverick.

THE DEVILS is stated to be 111-min, and I've grabbed a ticket for it on opening night. I'll decide on more later. Just didn't want that one to get away.

"The Devils" Spanish DVD release just arrived at my office. Popped it into my computer for a quick peek. It's non-anamorphic 4:3 letterbox. Image is 2:35. Run time is 103 minutes. Languages are Spanish and English with Spanish subtitles. Was able to turn subtitles off. Transfer is decent, but the film is obviously the shorter version.

Off topic, but who did you buy your Spanish DVD from? There's a Spanish-produced, region 2, set of Carol Reed's 'Fallen Idol/Outcast of the Islands' that's offered by only one site (American) that I can find. They also sell through the various Amazons and eBay at prices ranging from the upper $50s to the upper $60s.
I already have Criterion's Fallen Idol and would rather not pay so much for 'Outcast', which I want badly. I've tried all the European sites that I can find but none are Spanish, though I've googled for Spanish DVD sites. Am hoping that if I could order direct the price might be more reasonable.
Any help appreciated.

I bought it from seller on ebay who is located in Spain: [email protected]. Paid about $40 for it. Had it in my hands within about 10 days.

Ken,
Thanks again. Turns out the Carol Reed set is exclusive to FNAC....!!! No wonder I couldn't find it anywhere other than the one seller here. It's only 12 euros but shipping to the US is only by UPS - a whopping 32 euros! However, it looks like that's standard so may cover unlimited DVD purchases so I'll have to come up with some more to justify the cost.
Forums like this are an invaluable resource. As I said, a google search couldn't bring up any Spanish vendor sites, though the fault could be mine.

The Devils will be released in the UK by the British Film Institute on March 19th 2012 as a 2-Disc Special Edition licensed from Warner BUT Warner forbid them to use their own reconstruction and even Mark Kermode's Hell on Earth documentary will be edited due to the infamous Rape of Christ footage. The BFI disc will feature the original British Theatrical Version which is longer than the American Theatrical Version. http://www.criterionforum.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=11778

Will this get a US release?
Honestly, I've seen the rape of Christ footage and it really didn't seem to add much to the film. Nude Nuns (without guns) are running around already having an orgy of sorts, a few shots of them lying on top of Christ on the cross adds a visual but you get the same sense of what's going on without those shots. Plus this scene goes on and on it's long enough already, we get it.
Same with the ending, we all know what Redgrave is doing with the bone, seeing it is just gratuitous/pornographic
I would prefer to get a beautiful looking and important film on blu-ray without those few shots as they do not really add much to the film. Since WB already released this film on VHS not releasing it on DVD/Blu-ray seems like a step backward in the progression of history
WB just release the edited version already - it's still very good. WB has released edited version of other films and no one seemed to care
By the way, I find much less offense to Redgrave pleasuring herself with a dead man's charred bone, than a 12 year old Linda Blair pleasuring herself with a crucifix while shouting obscenities - I'm Catholic and that really does offend. "The Devils" seems tame compared to "The Exorcist" yet WB is all over that film again and again with special editions and added footage

The WAC responded to a question relating to this title and actually confirmed the rumors that this title is being blocked from release on the corporate level. So I'm guessing the only way we'll see this released by Warner Brothers in the U.S. is for a change of management regarding whomever is preventing this from release.

Among the silliest movie related crap I've ever heard. Holding back this film is silly. Most of us already have a substandard copy. They are simply keeping us from seeing the film good and clear as we'd like. Release it, already WB!

Pleasuring herself, eh? Even though I know she was technically masturbating with a crucifix, I guess I never really thought of that moment in a "pleasuring herself" sort of way...

I haven't read this whole thread, so maybe it's been mentioned. Gary Tooze posted this link on the Beaver site: http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0065N0SN0/ref=nosim?tag=dvdbeaver-21&link_code=as2&creativeASIN=B0065N0SN0&creative=374929&camp=211189 It'll be PAL, but it'll be THE DEVILS.

According to BFI contact at Criterion forum, it's DVD only, and it's the 1971 British theatrical cut, not the 2004 restoration. So, "rape of Christ" scene will be missing from this DVD (and it's the only difference between two versions, unlike US cut which is heavily cut). Here's special features: Special features* • DVD premiere presentation of the original UK ‘X’ certificate version • Newly filmed introduction with director Ken Russell • Audio commentary with Ken Russell, Mark Kermode, Mike Bradsell and Paul Joyce • Hell on Earth (Paul Joyce, 2002, 48 mins): documentary exploring the film's production and the controversy surrounding its original release • Director of the Devils (1971, 21 min): documentary featuring candid Ken Russell interviews and unique footage of Sir Peter Maxwell Davies recording his celebrated film score • Original on-set footage with commentary by editor Mike Bradsell • Amelia and the Angel (Ken Russell, 1958, 30 mins): Ken Russell's short film, a delightful mix of religious allegory and magical fantasy • Original UK trailer • Original US trailer • Fully illustrated booklet featuring new essays and notes from Mark Kermode, Craig Lapper (BBFC), Sam Ashby and others
the edition of Hell on Earth is a modified version from the one broadcast by Channel 4 back in 2002. Because the "rape of Christ" footage couldn't be licensed under any circumstances, that section of the documentary has been removed - but in its place director Paul Joyce has added additional material, including new stuff about the production and Derek Jarman's contribution.

Having finally scene the Church Orgy scene and the original Hell on Earth, I don't see how they can get rid of those moments in the documentary without complete making a new documentary since that's the focus. The big rush is getting to see Ken Russell and others in that tiny bedroom watching the edited scene on a tiny TV. It truly is the ultimate Ken Russell moment with the nuns gone wild cut with Oliver Reed peacefully giving himself communion. Not to mention the bone scene - that just really takes the film to a demented finale.
