I saw this restoration last week and it was quite remarkable. IIRC, they used original negative for a great deal of it and it was startlingly stable and clean. The shots from other sources were obvious and looked more like we're used to seeing silent films from the period appearing (if lucky), and overall it was much better than I thought it would be.

Apparently Kino still has issues with using incorrectly encoded framerates for its more recent silent film blu-rays. Any word on whether this was attended to for Calagari? Otherwise I'll be getting MoC/Eureka's from the UK.

It's not out yet, so who knows? What I do know is that the Eureka release starts shipping tomorrow with free delivery (https://www.eurekavideo.co.uk/moc/das-cabinet-des-dr-caligari - order before 29th September to get £1 off at checkout, you'll need to log in to add it to your basket), and that it has a new and exclusive David Kalat commentary, and that in all other regards it'll probably be better than the Kino release.

Since its release in 1920, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari has been consistently hailed as a masterwork of world cinema, and is certainly one of the most important and influential horror films ever made. It made a star out of Conrad Veidt, and is recognized as a key work in the German Expressionist style, with its groundbreaking art direction by Hermann Warm, Walter Reimann and Walter Röhrig creating a nightmarish and disturbing world on-screen that was quite unlike anything audiences had ever seen before.

SYNOPSIS:
In 1920, one brilliant movie jolted the postwar masses and catapulted the movement known as German Expressionism into film history. That movie was The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, a plunge into the mind of insanity that severs all ties with the rational world. Director Robert Wiene and a visionary team of designers crafted a nightmare realm in which light, shadow and substance are abstracted, a world in which a demented doctor and a carnival sleepwalker perpetrate a series of ghastly murders in a small community. This authoritative edition of The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari is a 4K restoration scanned from the (mostly) preserved camera negative at the German Federal Film Archive.
