Yep. His name is John Stockwell and he's also directed two other movies - Under Cover and Cheaters.
He's also written Dangerously Close, Breast Men and the recent Mark Wahlberg movie Rock Star.
Acting-wise, Stockwell is probably best known for his roles in Top Gun, Christine, Eddie and the Cruisers and My Science Project.
