Sub used during 2-channel playback (1 Viewer)

Perhaps someone could clear up a misconception I have... Is the sub-out on most recievers active during all playback? I keep thinking that during 2-channel playback the sub-out is inactive.

Dave, you're not really confused, you just don't have a SUB!
Speaking for my Yamaha AVR, yes the SUB OUT sends all bass in two-channel to the sub so long as all Speakers are set to SMALL and you tell the receiver to send bass to SUB (rather than MAINS or BOTH).
There are two parts to bass management. The above handles all the low frequencies
