...Add to that the fact that you can get an hd-dvd drive for the xbox 360 at 200$.....that was a huge selling point for me. It's nice that with xbox they give you the option whereas sony forces you to get blu-ray with their console wether you want it or not.

You're paying as much for the XBox 360 + HD-DVD add-on as you are for a PS3. The XBox has absolutely zero price advantage as a high-def disc player if you're wading into the pool for the first time.

That study's just as unscientific as the anecdotal nature of the discussions (such as those right here on HTF) it is purportedly measuring. There is no way it can separate the effect of biased posters that pop into and hijack those threads it is measuring.

That said, I do find it interesting regarding how much of the study focuses on Sony.

But there's a huge advantage if you've interested in gaming as well. I'm not a MS fanboy. Hell, I own all three current consoles. The Xbox is hands down the better gaming system at the moment. I believe it will continue to be until well in to next year.

The main reason it's the better gaming system at the moment is the fact that you can actually BUY one. :D

You're right, IF you're wading into the console and HD pool for the first time. But for the 6 million people who already have a 360, that's a sunk cost. So for those people, it really is a choice between $199 for HD-DVD or $499 for Blu-ray (if you can even find a PS3).

I've got a 360, but I'm still waiting this war out. I don't care who wins as long as SOMEBODY wins and soon.

You may be waiting quite awhile. I don't see either side throwing a knockout punch anytime soon. I have a gut feeling it may be a long fight. Therefore, I'm biting the bullet and getting my first HD DVD player this month.

No. It's because the library isn't good on the PS3 and won't be for a while to come. Nearly all the games can be had in better versions on the 360.

The only reason I'd recommend the PS3 to someone right now is for use as a Blu-Ray player. It's great at that task. Too bad Sony shot themselves in the foot and included a disk with such an awful video transfer. There's no way anyone will be impressed with Blu-Ray by watching Talladega Nights.

The software for the PS3 will eventually come up to speed. However, my original point remains valid - all of the gaming software in the world doesn't mean squat if you can't buy the console due to lack of availability.

The other thing to consider is the 100% certainty that purchasers of the 360 HD-DVD add-on are buying the drive to watch HD-DVD movies. There is no such hard data concerning Blu-ray movie use for PS3 purchasers.

Sure didn't (and still doesn't) stop PS3 from flying off the shelves within seconds of restock.

Brian,

We would expect this with any new console. 1.2 million WII have flown off the shelves in less time than Sony has sold400K PS3. In the meantime, nearly 800k 360's have sold in the same timeframe. It is not hard to have consoles 'fly off the shelves' when there are virtually none delivered to the retailers.

Sure it's hard to have them fly off the shelves - if people didn't want them (regardless of 50,000 or 5,000,000), they wouldn't sell.

800k 360s? Nice. About 3 times as many PS2 units flew off too. So much for lack of consumer trust in Sony.

I find it very hard to believe that 2.4 million PS2's have sold in the same timeframe, following the launch of the succeeding console. That'd be 1/4 the total number of 360's to date for a dead console.

The only hardware sales data that I'm aware of comes out of Japan. Here is data from last week.

- Wii: 350,358 [New Entry!]
- DS Lite: 176,901 24,477 (12.15%)
- PS3: 31,436 1,226 (3.75%)
- PSP: 23,917 6,898 (22.39%)
- PS2: 23,115 3,148 (11.99%)
- Xbox 360: 4,053 2,954 (42.16%)
- GBA SP: 1,572 308 (24.37%)
- Game Boy Micro: 1,252 17 (1.38%)
- Gamecube: 821 245 (42.53%)
- DS Phat: 140 72 (33.96%)
- GBA: 22 5 (18.52%)
- Xbox: 11 11 (N/A)

Source: Joystiq

Note that in Japan the Xbox 360 has been soarly lagging behind... well everything. It has gotten a recent bump with the release of Blue Dragon. However the big question is, who bought those 11 original Xbox units?

Edit: Oops! Spoke too soon. Here are the numbers for the month of November as reported by GameDaily BIZ and Joystiq.

Console Sales (units)
  • DS: 918k
  • PS2: 664k
  • Game Boy Advance: 661k
  • Xbox 360: 511k
  • Wii: 476k
  • PSP: 412k
  • PS3: 197k
Software Sales (units and sales grossed)
  • Gears of War: 1 million -- $61.5 million
  • Final Fantasy XII: 896k -- $49 million
  • The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess: 412k -- $20.2 million
  • Guitar Hero II: 356k -- $20.2 million

You are correct. Without the hardware, it really doesn't matter how good the console is. Without the hardware, the game developers will be less inclined to write for the console, and until we see original content for the pS3, most games will simply be ports from the 360, making little use of the power the PS3 is said to have.

Two points, Brian. The PS2 will continue to outsell both the 360 and the PS3 for a consideable time to come and has little barring on the next gen consoles. At under a hunderd dollars, basically a throw away price, it makes a great starter console, or as a second console.

As far as your comment on the PS3, bunk. The hype sold it on it's release date. And the added 360 sales are lost Sony customers. If this continues, Sony may never catch up in this next gen battle. Right now, I would give my hedge to the 360 as the probable winner in this generation of gamming consoles.
