I don't know how to properly pump a gas machine because of it :). but, I'd much rather have the gas guy do it, as I'd rather not have my steering wheel smell of gas.. :).

So the casinos are shutting down. Why?

The "essential" personnel still working are the casino monitors? Wow, this state has some major problems.

I've driven in many other cars from out of state, they don't smell like gas! (I live in NJ but I'm for self-serve, personally, when I drive anyway ;) )

As far as the casinos, they have to close them because the state has these "monitors" that monitors the gambling industry so because there "monitors" are no longer working, by federal law (I think it's a federal law), the casinos cannot operate until these monitors are monitoring.

Thanks for the info Jay. Glad to know the casino monitors aren't considered essential.

What's really sad is all the people who can't work today, or however long this goes on. Probably doesn't affect the state employees a lot, most of them have pretty nice benefits, just using up some vacation or sick time.

But what about the casino employees, the local restaurant employees, etc. When the tourists stop showing up, or the employees are told not to come in, many of them are probably getting unpaid days off. Doesn't help their budget.

Pretty sad, the way government sometimes operates.

Unfortunately, this really isn't Corzine's decision. There are existing laws and regulations that require the governor to shut down "non-essential" services when there is no budget. It is not up to him to determine what is and isn't essiential; these are explicitly stated by the existing rules and regulations.

One could certainly make the argument that these rules should be changed so that things that make money (like the lottery and casinos) can stay active, but I do not know if the legislature is allowed to focus on anything but the budget at this point.

I am not sure its true. While he has to shut things down. He can rule that the casinos are essential. Since it brings in almost 2 million dollars a day to the state in revenue. I believe he shut it down as a tatic to pressure the legislators. He figures the casinos would use their power to push them into settling. Also, I am not sure if this is true or not. But, I heard that the casinos actually pays for the casino control personel. They pay the state to run it to keep it legit. So technically, if true. The state should have an obligation to keep them going.

While not getting to political. This state is a cluster-f@#k! All they do is tax and tax. I have a problem with the fact that Corzine's budget has 2 billion in new spending. How about trying something new....cut some crap out. I want a Porsche and a 65 plasma. But, guess what?? I can't afford it. So I have a Dodge and a 27" tv. And even if I say fine raise the sales tax. What are they going to do next year or so when the costs in the budget go up and they need more money???

For a second there, I thought you were talking about New York :rolleyes
New York almost never has a budget done on time, they just pass provisional budgets to keep the state from shutting down until they finally pass a real one. Wonder why N.J. can't do that in the mean time.
I have a comp room booked for Sunday, I sure hope the hotel won't make me fork over some $ if they are closed and I bag out less than 24 hours before
I'll give 'em a call and see what the deal is.
