The phone was ringing off the hook this afternoon. My Uncle was NOT happy his vacation time was cut short, heh. This Corzine guy is not going to be popular with alot of people after this, and even more so if the state tax is raised....

But more importantly, if the beaches are closed... The Shore communities will want his neck .

Dosn't matter to me though .

Slightly off topic, but I sure hope this isn't a sign of things to come. You have to pay $5 a month to read the website you linked. I googled it and found another source for the story. It looks like the beaches will be open until Wednesday.

When the feds shut down in 94 I frankly didn't notice a thing. We should do it more often and for longer duration.

My city is undergoing a similar budget crisis. Most non-essential personnel laid off until the voters pass a budget.

I'm getting today off (without pay probably) because of the shut down. We can live with that.

My son is missing his drivers license exam today. This was scheduled a year ago, but the DMV agencies are closed. When all of this is over, it could take months before he gets a new exam date. No joy there.

This is a classic political scare tactic. While people are upset about a temporary loss of services, the major losers in battles such as these are the individuals who provide those services as their livelihood.

My local school board recently pulled a similar stunt laying off all non-tenured employees (i.e. everyone who works for the school except the teachers who have lifetime jobs after working for only three years). Lay off letters went to employees with 30 years service from administrative assistants to instructional aides to janitors to security guards. Talk about a lack of loyalty, and great example of how people who receive a little bit of power throw the lives of other citizens on end just to have their agenda passed.

I can see shutting down non-essential services that are not revenue producing but it seems stupid to close down casinos and the like if they are generating income.

Here's the bad news: I just saw on both CNN and Fox News Channel that the casinos ARE starting to shut down as of 0800 hours EDT today. Keep it up and all casinos will be closed in Atlantic City by the end of the week, putting some 50,000 people out of work and depriving the state of New Jersey US$1.3 million per day in tax revenue.

I don't get this. By doing this, he's not only loosing more money.... But how does lowering one tax, and raise another save the people of NJ money? From what I hear, that's really what all this is about...

People generally liked Cody, the former govenor, from what I hear..Really too bad that he apparently got scared because of money issues...

Heh, here's another easy solution now that I think about it. Corzine has about 4 billion dollars... Why not use 2 billion and solve the problem? Biggest hero in the state that way... Or is 2 Billion not enouh to live on for the next thirty years or so of his life?
