Sounds like you are a canidate for the $0.49/ft HomeDepot 12 ga speaker wire.
As far as stands go..how high do you need? You can often get great results just getting the speakers up off of the carpet. This can be done with spikes, wooden dowels, etc.
One guy went to a nearby tile place and got 2 18" ceramic tiles which he placed under the feet of each speaker. He also found placing some coins under the front feet gave him a nice tilt which (to him) improved the sound.
The trick is to de-couple the speaker from the carpet or platform it is sitting on. Rubber door wedges, or pink-rubber erasers from the stationary section have all been used to good effect. It may not LOOK so good, but it is inexpensive and a fun thing to do for a few hours.
Good Luck.

Concrete blocks always work well for cheap speaker stands.Just get some black material and wrap them, duct tape in the back and your set.
If that doesent get your attention,I made shelves simmilar to Mike Knapps. They are for my rear speakers but would work equally as well as fronts, just make sure to get a long enough nipples so the speakers are out from the wall. One thing to remember, the longer the nipple, the larger the pipe and fitting need to be in diameter or else they might sag.
