Sound system for apartment or condo living (1 Viewer)

I have a friend moving to an apartment for an interim time before buying a condo. What size speakers would be best to give good surround performance without being audible by the neighbors? Is a sub even appropriate in an apartment or condo? I see whole systems advertised, some by good names but the speakers are very small. Will these sound tinny? Speaker wire is a problem in an apartment. Are wireless speakers viable? Is there special flat speaker wire that could be routed under a carpet without showing through? With the boom in condo sales what are people doing?
Any thoughts on these problems would be appreciated.

It will probably have to be small bookshelves with stands decoupling them to the carpet with some spike system. The main thing neighbors here is the floor resonating due to the speakers. The small speakers will do, but since a sub isn't very appropriate in a condo, you want deeper extension than they offer. http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showd...number=100-041 for the flat speaker wire.
