I used a sony a/v receiver to use with my new SpeakerCraft big bang 8 channel amp. The amp is working and the signal moves through the equipment just fine, I just can't use the volume control on the receiver. At first I thought it was the receiver as it is older, so I purchased a new Sony receiver. Same issue. I'm completely baffled. Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong?

99%* of AVR...
If you connect Zone 2/3/4(however many are applicable) via pre-out, the OTHER end has to have volume control.
What model number AVR so we can read the manual for you.
*Maybe 95%. I've had Yamaha, Panasonic(back when they were good...and cared), Onkyo/Integra and Marantz.
None of the 7-odd AVR I've had that did Zone audio had volume control via the pre-out.

It is an STR-DH13- if I'm not mistaken. So I need to put some sort of volume control at the end of the series? How would I do that if the outputs to the speakers are on the amp.

You buy either...
A Speakercraft(or one of the dozens of other brands) "Multi-zone controller"...
Or take the Big Bang back where you bought it and get this...

Plus...how many of these you need...

Edit:
The only two BB(8 channel) I see are an 835 and 865. They both have zone volume. If you want "further" control, you need individual controls in the room, which I'm not sure the BB series are capable of that...without "something" before it as a control...such as(one example of many, the "multi-zone controller")...
