Minidiscs and DVD-RAMs both used caddies and failed to penetrate the market (probably because there was no user base who owned the drives).
Rip the kid's DVDs to a computer (a personal use copy is legal) and connect your computer to the TV. In a few years I'd expect to see budget oriented media servers on the market (right now they are $$$).
