Wow. What you "win" in money you pretty much totally lose in self respect. Have you no shame? Man up and pay the bets you lost dude! I can't believe your bragging about this on a international forum1 LOL!
Why is this guy even allowed to post on the board anymore? He's obviously a troll, he contributes absolutely nothing constructive to the forum and seems to be just a downright lowlife in general. Mods?
Seriously, this guy has been trolling from the start. He's hasn't lost anything, you guys are giving him exactly what he wanted. Just let the thread die...
EDIT; lol, see, Brent knows. But the guy's smart enough to troll while obeying the letter of the law, so I can't see banning him. I just wish people wouldn't fall for it.
Out of 25 posts, every single one of them is about Dark Knight "failing" at the Box Office. Every single one. Obviously you must be joking and playing around with us all because if you're not.. yikes!
Like I said, the mods seriously need to look into banning this clown. He IS a troll and contributes absolutely nothing to the HTF. Hopefully he and his antics will be gone soon.
Trolls never actually "hurt" anyone, but they never contribute anything constructive to the forum either. All they do is try to stir up s**t by baiting people into arguments as a distraction from meaningful discussion. If you look at this guy's post history I think it's clear why he's here and personally I don't see him being an asset to the HTF. I guess the mods will ultimately decide his fate, but I just had to throw my .02 in on the subject.
I really hate to be the one to say it to my fellow HTF-ers here but (here it goes.) Why So Serious?
Just because you see a thread's been updated doesn't mean you need to read it if you didn't like what you read there the last time.
I thought this forum was a place open to all film related comments and opinions - even ones that seem stupid or a waste of time to you personally.
I manage a video store and routinely have people come in and tell me that Children of Men is the worst movie ever made and that No Country For Old Men ended the way it did obviously so they could do a sequel.
I just nod and point them to the "good movies" like Fool's Gold and The Farting Retard (O.K. I made that last one up.)
Freedom of speech doesn't mean "forced to listen." At least not up here in Canada it doesn't.
I say give Ol Charlie a break - personally I think he's doing a Joe Bob Briggs/Borat kinda thing.
Actually I have to agree with 'ol Charlie on this one - for better or for worse we'll never know what TDK would have done at the BO under "normal" circumstances. ANY numbers thrown around to that effect are simply pure speculation. Heath's tragic death made all traditional tracking impossible. This movie was going to be big regardless of quality. The overwhelming early critical support added to that and ( I have no other word for it) the INTENSE word of mouth of the HS-UNI (i.e 16-25) demographic have propelled it into the stratosphere.
Personally I thought the film would do well (+25% of BB) but would only be a blockbuster (300+) if Heath's Joker was embraced as a pop culture icon.
So we all know now that it's a mega-hit but we can still only guess what it may have done had Heath not died. We will never know.
Now we'll just have to wait and see how much influence it has on future comic book / superhero movies. IMO, that will be it's true legacy in the annals of Hollywood and not in it's ledger's.
The Dark Knight was always going to do $300+ mill, that's the normal trajectory for a franchise back on the upswing with good word of mouth from the preceding installment. C'mon just 25% over BB? Inflation alone would account for a sizable chunk of that. Then factor in the Joker being a much more interesting villain (regardless of who was cast) ... the only way this was going to make under $300 million was if the movie had terrible word of mouth.
Ledger's passing did give the film more exposure, but he has also has one more movie coming ... is that going to do $300+ million too? I doubt it.
Also quality has something to do with it too. The Matrix Reloaded had a similar pre-hype to the TDK too ... that fizzled quickly because the movie wasn't very good.
TDK is interesting because it's one of the few event sequels this decade that's actually surpassed the original critically and commercially.
As for future legacy I think TDK more than anything reannoints Batman as the king of the Hollywood -- take a back seat Indy (just like '89), take a break Spidey. Also I think the pendeleum has probably swung a little bit from the more teeny-bopper approved blockbusters like Spider-Man and Pirates to now the darker, edgier Batman Begins/Casino Royale/300/Sin City style.
