I have a Kenwood VR 505 HT Receiver that I bought 5+ years ago. For the past few months it's been making me crazy as the remote control has been flaky. Since it wasn't working properly with any remote the issue was with the IR receiver in the unit. The remote would work for a few minutes when I turned the unit on and would stop working after that.

I looked the symptoms up on the web and found that there was a very common problem with 3 poor solder joints (for the IR detector) on one of the circuit boards. I found a detailed description of the problem and pictures. I opened up the receiver, located the 3 PTH connections with the poor solder joints and re-soldered them. Works like a champ now. The internet is a wonderful thing.
