My wife and i were killing some time today waiting for her son so we stopped in a pet store that was on the way.

    what a mess.

its one of the everything types.
    small animals
birds dogs cats hamsters rabbits guinea pigs

anyway they have all the pets in aquarium like cells.

enclosed glass in the front and some type of fiber board looking stuff for the walls and a hole for lighting in the tops.
the dogs had a cage like material on the bottom, no flat surface at all.
no way to tell by looking in the windows what kind of air flow was being supplied.

the dogs werent so bad at least they looked clean.

the rabbit things were dirty and smelled terrible.

the ferret box had a giant pile of crap in one corner.

the bird windows were the worst.
they were the same type as the dogs but there was a cage material instead of plastic window in front.
but it was coated and most of the coating was "chewed" off.
one of the cages had two small parrots but there was no bird stand or anything at all in the cage for the bids to sit on.
so both were just walking around on the bottom and on the front of the cage itself.

the stuff on the bottom was some type of mulched fiber, nothing flat for the birds to stand on.

the birds themselves were sick looking.

the crown feathers looked wet the tail feathers seemed to be falling out or looked chewed on.

    just sad.

the other 4 or 5 bird "rooms" didnt look much better. at least they had a thing on the side to sit on.

this was one of those all in one pet shops like you might find in a mall pet shop, this is a stand alone off to the side of a strip mall in northeast philly.

    i was appalled

it's a good 45 minutes to an hr away but we're tempted to go back there and take some shots with my camera phone.

i just dont know what i would do with them.
is there someplace to report this stuff to?

i really hate these places why do people continue to buy animals from these craps houses.

    SPCA

    Animal Control

    Health Dept

Also whatever exotic pet regulatory body there is. Good chances something illegal is going on in these type places, best way to get them shut down.

How about the local "looking for ratings" news show? You know the ones like "so and so to the rescue." Maybe a little attention from a story on this place would get the attention of the proper authorities?

In many states, including mine, pet stores are regulated and inspected by the state Dept of Agriculture. Hard to tell about your state, Tony, because I don't know where your wife left you. [IMG]

I would suggest a call to the appropriate regulatory agency before trying to make a news story out of it.

Oh that is so horrible. I wish I had a huge house, I'd never stop taking in animals from places like that (my cat is a rescue cat. I wish I didn't have such a small apartment - I just don't have room for more than her).

so i should comtact the dept of agriculture?

btw my side thing says where ever my wife lets me not LEFT me.
    although left me is funny.
    .
yea the place is called pets plus

all the people seemed to be young early 20's or younger accept for one person who seemed in his 40's.
all milling around the front of the store.

also i just remembered there was a koi/koy? pond in the front window that appeared fine.
i dont know how these fish normally act but as i walked up to them they all acted like a
bunch of puppies at feeding time.
all coming right over to the edge of the pond and coming right out of the water with opening their mouths for food.
i stuck my finger in and a couple tried to eat it.

What can I say? I can't read for shit. [IMG] I'll blame the blood spots on my glasses.

The PA Dept of Agriculture would be the place to file a complaint.

It is Koi, and that is how they act all the time. They are like dogs with fins if they think you have treats to give.

it's the people who should be kept in cages. the ones who paint tetras should be tatooed IDIOT on their foreheads [IMG]

It is sooo hard to find healthy fish in Canadian pet stores. Chains, or the few independents left, the same sick or deformed fish, they probably mostly die a few days after sale.

I figure that's why there are so many used aquariums for sale.
