And now it's fried. The complete inside is soaked. I woke up this morning to LOUD "cracks" and "pops" coming from all of my speakers. It was VERY loud and sounded horrible. Anyways, I still have to test my speakers to see if they're blown. The reciever is a gonner though and I JUST finished paying for it ... (it took a year with no interest). Besides myself being mad, I need to replace the reciever soon because all I do really in my free time is watch movies with family/friends and listen to music. My system is as follows (minus the now fried Denon 1803 listed).

Paradigm Monitor 7 (fronts)
Paradigm CC-370 (centre)
Energy Take 2.2 (rears)
AVR - Denon AVR-1803 (now fried)
DVD - Phillips DVD727
Behgringer Feedback Destroyer
Sub - Passive Tempest 194L vented.
Sub amp - Old Kenwood 2 channel reciever.

So does anyone have any suggestions for a Reciever or Pre/Pro that will match good with the Digms ? I was happy with the Denon but I was a little rushed into it at the time. I'd like to maybe try something else since I have the unfortunate opportunity. My Budget is a VERY restricted $900 CND. Thanks guys.

Denon makes good receivers. See if you can get the latest model equivalant from them.

Sorry to hear that. I heard this happened to a member of another forum as well...an even more expensive unit..HK7200. You might want to look into the Pioneer VSX-1014TX-K which probably has a better amp section than the Denon you fried. It retails for about $799CND.

What makes you so sure that the receiver is a total loss? Why not take it into a service center and see if you can get it cleaned and if it actually needs it, repaired?

Well, a green curcuit board is charred black in some spots. And everything else is soaked in urine. Even if I could get it repaired, I wouldn't be able to handle the constant smell of cat urine in my living room. The cat is gone to the SPCA tomorrow. This is his 4th and final offense. He pissed all over my DVD collection a while back and I had to throw away 50+ DVD cases/covers. Now the DVD's are in spindles. My wife kept telling me to give him another chance, but now she agrees he's gone.

Thanks Kevin, but my budget is a very FIRM $900 CND. Less is better of course ... but $900 being my max to spend. WAF + I don't have the $$$ right now and will need to use credit from a store (the no interest 6 months thing is what I usually do and I always pay it before the 6 months is up).

Joe, your budget, The Denon AVR2105 or the Yamaha RXV750 would fit the bill in terms of being comparable/a slight upgrade.

Yep. I love that place. I bought the reciever from AB Sound when I didn't really know much about HT though. The digms came after when I found out about HTF and Ark . I'll head down to AudioArk tomorrow and audition the Denon. I don't know if they carry Yamaha ... I'm gonna listening to everything I can, just like I did when I decided on the Monitors.

It's too bad that one salesman (now ex-) can cause everybody there to be tarred with the same brush. But hey, life is all about looking after people, and some people learn this lesson better than others.

Can you even get that covered by homeowner's insurance?

Ya know, it's not just the pet-leakage that's a problem for electronics.

...or the house-plants being watered (or dripping after having been watered.)

At work, we very nearly had a massive disaster from water coming out of the ceiling from a leak three floors above. Fortunately it didn't get much over three inches deep on the floor, and had come down the walls. The racks had 3" deep bases, and it was only the wall-mount dimmer rack (48 ETC Sensor dimmers and the control card - fzzt!)

Yet with the simple addition of, say, a sheet-metal awning for wall-mounts, or some sort of roof over the AV stacks, a lot of these problems could be, well, if not avoided, reduced.

I had 6 inches of water on the floor of a store I used to run because the roof of the department store three hundred meters away in the same mall caved in under torrential downpour. Fortunately, we always kept product off the floor and elevated, so I only had to pay to have the carpets cleaned.

Look at the Marantz SR5400 from www.2001audiovideo.com It sells for $799 and is a great receiver. I actually trade my Yamaha RX-V1400 for the SR5400 + cash. I found myself actually likeing the sound that the Marantz put out through my Paradigm Studios(v3). Very detailed. I was sad to see it go when I got my Pioneer 56TXi.

Joe, that is a life lesson right there. Let me tell you, I am a brutal customer when I am on the other side of the table. I tolerate neither ignorance nor tomfoolery when buying a car, furniture, or whatever. But hey, forewarned is forearmed, right?

The Yamaha RXV750 has a retail of CDN$849 and a street price of $785-797. The Denon AVR2105 retails for $999 and streets for about $935. But that's not what you were asking me, was it?

I don't want to run afoul of HTF's policies about commercialism and self-promotion, so drop me a PM of you want and we can discuss this further.

As an aside, the titanium finish for the RXV750 was so hot, Yamaha Canada (and by extension, us) is out of stock in the short term, so we have ordered in the black units. We should have them by the end of the week.

Well, I cleaned it up, Febreezed it for the poor techs (LoL) and sent it back to my dealer. I flat out told them what my cat had done. They laughed and then told me they'de ship it out to the local Denon repair centre tomorrow. I'll find out it's fate in approx 10 days. The guy told me not to keep my hopes up, it'll probably be hard to fix since almost 100% of the inside was soaked with urine. We opened it up to look at the insides and alot of components were black and oozing fluid. Also, the urine had warped and swelled alot of the cuicuit boards. Oh well, guess I'll wait and see.

I'm not too hopeful of my reciever getting repaired so in the mean time, I'm gonna audition the following:

Yamaha RX-V750
Denon 2105
Pioneer 1014
HK AVR230

Any other good budget recievers I should throw in there ?

Marantz SR5400 was a nice receiver. I actually enjoyed the sound more than my Yamaha RX-V1400.

"Look at the Marantz SR5400" or wait for couple of months for the NEW versions and get the step up model for the same price.

After talking with a few guys at 2001 I found out that Marantz has an above average markup!

I'm in the same market, and was quoted $899 for the 2105.

Also look at the refurbs on Ecost, I can get the 2105 shipped "all in" for a hair over $600!!!

That's about $400 cheaper, and I think I can get a pretty major repair job done for $400!!

Thanks for the suggestion going to ecost. What does everyone think of the Denon AVR-3802 ? I know it's a bit older but is has some nice power and it's fairly cheap. The fact it does not upsample component video does not concern me. I won't be using the video switching features at all.

It actually comes to $760 CND after duties/taxes/shipping. Thats cheaper than I paid for my AVR-1803 ....
