I have what should be a fairly simple question about upscaling DVD players on my 50" Sony SXRD TV. Right now, I just have a regular Pioneer 480p DVD player hooked up to it, and I'm thinking about upgrading to an Oppo to get the upscaling (and to free a component input). I'm wondering how much of an effect I'll see from the move though. If my TV is already upsampling all signals to the native 1920 x 1080 of the projector, then won't an upconverting DVD player just be putting two scalers in series? If one is vastly superior to the other then I can see how there's a difference, but in my case, will it be very noticeable?

The new DVD player would be a holdover for a year or two while the HD format war settles down and hardware/software prices drop, but I'd still like to get the most out of the TV I have. Ideally, I'd like to be able to see an A/B comparison with the Oppo and my current player on my TV, but I don't think that's really possible.

So am I completely off base with my thoughts on scalers?
