OK, so yesterday I was watching the English Patient. There is this bath tub scene between Kristin Scott Thomas and Ralh Fiennes...
Don't they get aroused during those scenes? I know these scenes are probably not as sexy on the set, surrounded by a whole bunch people and they probably not naked down there but still, lying down in a tub with such a beautiful woman...
I am aware that smart editing suggests a lot of things that are not. But the above scene had none of that, and you can think of many movies where it is obvious that both actors are actually naked, such as Marlon Wayans and his girlfriend in Requiem for a Dream.
I am sure these guys get visibly aroused sometimes, if not often. How do they deal with that? Do they conceal it? Do they even try?
I remember Sharon Stone saying in some magazine that one of worse memories was when it seemed that this guy was actually trying to have sex with her. I guess he got a little caught up in the role...

These are things that make you realise that while most celebrities are grossly overpaid, their job is not very easy either. I am sure that many of them dread shooting sex scenes. I would.

Holadem - I wish I was in that tub though...

I have often wondered about this myself, I mean if i'm an actor and I have to play a sex scene with say Estella Warren

, I don't see any way around not getting aroused! I mean yes it is a scene, and were both professional actors, but i'm still touching her body(OH GOD!), how can one not get aroused by this!?! It's not like it's something that can be controlled, it just happens. I don't know, maybe while their doing the scene their both thinking of someone really ugly naked.

Well, if you were surrounded by dozens of crew members and several hot lights beaming down onto your skin while a director shouts at you telling what to do AFTER you've spent two hours waiting for the scene to be setup perfectly, would you be aroused? I wouldn't. :)
Oh, and there's only one cinematic sex scene I know of that is reportedly real: Mick Jagger and Anita Pallenberg in Performance. Word has it that an uncensored version of said sex scene became quite a hit with the, ahem, adult movie theater crowd.
And there's a rumor that a lot of the sex scenes you see on Cinemax and Showtime at late night is not fake and is borderline pornography. Just a rumor though.
(By the way, anybody wanna guess how long this thread lasts before somebody gets offended and complains to one of the mods?

I don't see why the mods should object as long as we keep it clean, I mean were all adults here right. :)

Seems like a legitamate question for discussion to me. I've often wondered how they deal with it.

We are all adults here, but I've seen threads with far less "offensive" content get shut down. Just as long as we tread carefully, I guess we'll be OK. :)

The thing to remember is that it is a "job" when all's said and done. I've been doing stage work for ~28 years. While the types of scenes you see in the movies aren't nearly as prevalent in live theater, they do occur, and I've had to deal with them twice. Believe me, the last thing on your mind in the moment is sex. You're so focused on the performance...erm...not that kind of performance
wink.gif
...that arousal is, at best, unlikely.
Heck, just an onstage kiss can be incredibly awkward. I just did a show last winter in which I was romantically cast against the wife of my day job boss. Now she's a very attractive woman, but I assure you, arousal was not a factor.

I think back to some remarkably well built individuals and I would imagine that I would reach, ahem, a "condition" as involuntarily as actors get the giggles. I mean, it would be very hard to be in a scene like Croupier or Shakespeare in Love without being affected. I suppose it's possible, and I would love to try!
But then again, many European beaches and spas deal with this problem and seem to have it down.

Hollywood marriages and affairs are very often made and broken on location. (As you have read.) The amount of actual arousal seen in movie may be hard to determine. But the fact is (as you know) the biggest fringe benefit to their profession is being stuck in the middle of nowhere with each other in those big trailers with the cushy springs rockin’ and rollin’ all night long!

I vaguely recall a quote attributed to George C. Scott, I believe, which he said while preparing to shoot a love scene in bed with some actress, which went along the lines of "Madame, I apologize if I become aroused, and I apologize if I don't."

I was watching Howard Stern one day and he had on Luke Perry. They were talking about a scene in which Luke had Ashley Judd naked on top of him. Howard asked "Do you get horny during love scenes? What do you do in a situation like that?" Perry said it was only human to get wood and he usually asked the director for a break during love scenes to "relieve" himself.

I think the only way around it is to have sex with a lot of hot sexy women 24/7 so when you have to do it at work, it's no big deal :)

I was watching a talk show years ago. It must have been something like David Letterman or something of that nature. Anyways, an actress was being interviewed on the subject. She was asked: "when doing a sex sceen with an actor do they get aroused? If so, what is your reaction?"
She made a comment like: "One time a guy got really aroused and I was semi disguisted by it, but the next scene I did with another guy he had no reaction. To say the least, I was kind of dissapointed. Like there was something wrong with me or something of that nature."
I'm not sure who it was on the interview and I don't even recall how long ago it was. It has just stuck in my mind trough all these years. I think that is somewhat close to the conversation, but maybe I'm wrong.

Don't shoot me for this, I'm inclined to agree that would be to kind, but still, don't shoot me for this: I read an interview once with Linda Evans when she was playing Krystle in the long running TV series the Dynasty. I didn't watch the series, no really, I was too young so I wasn't allowed... but I knew who she were, and I remember reading something she said about the frequent love scenes, about which she said that most male performers used to have a sock over their... thing... to hide their excitement. She also said another trick female actors could use was to wear some kind of skin colored tights provided the lightning etc did not reveal it.
The real funny thing she wrote though was one particular male actor on that show actually looked so much forward to these sex scenes, that he actually would not perform if the female actors did use such tights. Linda Evans actually tried to wear one anyway once, without telling this guy, and he got so surprised when he found out, the expression on his face had her laughing out loud, the guy getting pissed off etc, and basically the whole scene getting postponed one day.
Anyway, I am sure there are tricks to these things.
A more current interview I read was with James Caviezel who starred opposite Jennifer Lopez in Angel eyes. I have not seen the movie, but there is a love scene between them, which I remember reading about, about which he basically said that he would not get naked with her, that the scene be shot with only their upper bodies showing aso out of consideration for his wife.
As for "real" sex scenes, the rumours I have read repeatedly is about Don't look now (Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie) and To live and die in LA (Willem Dafoe and some woman)

Jane March and Tony Leung were reportedly doing the wild thing for real in "The Lover", and probably any film with Mickey Rourke in it...
And don't forget the most recent documented case of actor wood: Last week's premiere of Enterprise (the "rub gel on each other's backs" scene between T'Pol and Trip).

Mickey Rourke and Lisa Bonet were supposedly doing it for real in "Angel Heart". Unless it was for publicity, director Alan Parker hinted at it. In "Wild Orchid" Rourke and Carre Otis are defenitely doing it for real. Playboy did a layout with shots from the film and it's very clear they're playing hide the salami.

While watching Playboy TV or late night Cinemax with my recent ex, during some of the sex scenes shed say "He isnt even hard" and Id think "How??"
Jenny McCarthy was talking about a recent co star and a sex scene and how excited he got and how embarrassed by it he was. I remember reading a interview with Dana Delany who said sometimes it happens and often it doesnt- and she said the same thing someone else did above, if not,she feels sort of - undesireable.
