Best part of the whole episode...Kristen Wiig's camel-toe. Hands down.
(Hader's fucking BRILLIANT Peter O'Toole notwithstanding, obviously. This guy's gonna be Sandler-big someday.)
The "Jon-Bovi" sketch, though...that one made me puke out of holes I didn't know I could even USE. Saved only by Jaime's "Floppy dong?" remark at the very end.
To each his own. The Jon Bovi sketch was the highlight of the epsiode. Their song versions were totally hilarious! I dunno -- I guess you need to watch it more than once to catch all the Bizarro World lyrics. It gets funnier every time I watch it.
"I'm not here... Roll you like a pleasant day" That's high comedy. "Doot-doot doot-doot... NO!" would have made milk come out of my nose if I had been drinking it.
The news interview was also great. The rest of the show wasn't memorable, although the Cider talk had its moments. The Nascarettes sketch was one of those pointless, one joke numbers. And not a very funny one at that.
she was the best part of the whole show, there were some decent skits, but nothing memorable. I liked Fred's imitation of Martin Scorcese, it was spot on. The "New York Stories" clips were interesting to say the least, you either had to know the person they were playing or something...
I like Seth's delivery of the jokes on Weekend Update, reminds me a bit of Norm McDonald, that sort of dry, right to the point act.
Jamie is my least favorite host that I've seen in watching SNL in the last year and half. She's sort of cute, too tan for my likings, but she just wasn't really that special. I can't wait for Hugh Laurie.
Both dems and reps get their come-upons on a daily basis... Will Forte made a living the last couple seasons doing Zell Miller (ha) - politics, especially American politics deserve to be made fun of - relentlessely.
My gf and I loved the Scorcese/Perez bit. We have been talking like Perez all week now. She nailed it. Pressley's appeal eludes us I guess, she might be cute to look at it in a very artificial way but has NO stage presence whatsoever and has no idea how to use her voice in a stage type enviornment. Was hoarse and yelling alot and just very unpleasant to listen to. Defifnitely better than the abomination of the Cook episode though... Reilly should be interesting as he actually (gasp!) has talent!
So, what did everyone think of last night's episode?
I lauged sparingly. I love John C. Reilly, but he just seemed so neverous and flubbled some lines. My favorite bit of the night had to of been the "Robert!" sketch with the tacos and such.
This episode needed more Fred Armisen. Was Bill Hader even in on it? It looks like they are testing Andy Samberg to be the star of the show. Keenan seemingly got almost as much airtime.
It's great seeing Kirstin and Jason team up for the Two A-Holes again. I think it was one of the better sketches of the night.
Too each their own, but SNL for me has ran it's course LONG ago. I still like those from the '70s and '80s, but much past that gets thin. It really doesn't have much appeal anymore for me, but maybe because I'm older. If not for the teens and college kids, it's hard to see why it has remained on the air for so long. I really don't know anyone older that watches it outside maybe a handfull posting on this site.
I actually liked Saturday's show. The first two this season were disappointing to me, but this episode seemed like it was actually written by adults (for the most part).
I did notice that Seth Meyers got hardly any laughs during WU.
I believe these SNL threads have the higest thread-shitting to commentary ratios on the board. We get it, you think the show was better way back when. Move on. This thread is littered with the same exact comments. If you're not even bothering to watch the show, why are you posting?
Which is not to say that this episode was any good -- aside from the hilarious cold opening and the digital short with Harpoon Man, there was little of value comedy-wise, and a couple of skits that made you wonder how bad the stuff they cut exactly was. Because most of the show was jaw-droppingly awful.
I watch mostly out of habit these days, but it's gotten exceedingly rare that I make it through the 2nd musical number out of digust/boredom. Dane what his name was just beyond awful, Jaime was just boring, and Reilly was pitiful. 0 for 3 this year and not even a D+ on the report card.
Last year I thought there were 3 or 4 pretty good shows -- some of the best in years though so many terrible one's it was hard to keep up.
One thing I have noticed and has gotten increasingly tiresome is the nonstop gay jokes. Has there been a single show in 2 or 3 years where one of more of the guys doesn't go Drag Queen (Reilly Saturday, all the Carol skits last year) or Flaming Queen (hasn't been funny since Snap, Snap Wayans). When in doubt start flinging the not so subtle and rarely even remotely funny anus/rectum/genital/dildo jokes -- it ceased even being remotely shocking after the first couple Amb. Gay Duo Superhero shorts and most of the rest was done far better by Python in the 70's..
SNL by nature (and tradition) has a very low quality to quantity ratio. I never go into an episode thinking that there will be more than a few good sketches per ep, but they do hit a homerun sometimes where they get to 50% or one sketch is just deliriously funny -- which is what keeps me coming back. Of course, I always record and watch -- I couldn't stand sitting through the commercials and the musical guests live.
I also record the classic SNL eps at 3am. Quite frankly, even though these episodes are chosen because they are stand-out eps in the series, they're still very hit and miss. People who think the show used to be much better are working on nostalgia and not actual experience. They just had the Gwyneth Paltrow ep this Saturday, and even though that's an absolute classic show, it was still only half funny. I've seen some of the Belushi era shows this way, and they really have one or two great sketches and lots of filler yet most people think there was a time when SNL was 90 minutes of pure comedy. Just never was and never will be.
Look, MadTV only has an hour to fill and that show is just as inconsistent. And does anyone remember Fridays? There's something about a sketch comedy show that is difficult to pull of with consistency. And on top of that, one person's trash is another person's treasure, so while I've rewatched the Jon Bovi sketch from the Jamie Pressley show dozens of times, joshEH almost threw up. So obviously, there is going to be inconsistency on a personal level.
I still think the show is funnier now then the time they kept getting Michael Jordan/Charles Barley/ Deion Sanders. And nothing will ever top the MC Hammer show for sheer badness.
You know, for me, the SNL thread has run it's course. It was much more interesting long ago, when Ryan and Craig posted. Since then, I just don't read it anymore. It's just not as good. I mean, Jeffrey's threadcrapping? It's been done. Lets move on. We've seen it before. And what's up with Hanson's posts? Come on.
For me, I'm sticking with the silica threads. They're much funnier.
The reason this ep was at least watchable was Reilly. MAN, did he give it his all, even the real crappy skits. He's so talented he just leaves the rest of the cast in the dust 1/2 the time. I too LOVE Wigg as one of the a-holes. I used to live in NYC and worked part time as a personal trainer in a REALLY jappy gym and I personally knew several women who were EXACTLY like her! I mean, it's eerie. ANd for some reason she just looks so freaking hot as that character, I don't know why.
And actually I think that the Jim Carrey hosted ep from like 1996 or so was amazing. EVERY sketch in it was hilarious. He just smoked everyone.
I remember reading someone's commentary on SNL a while back and it was one of the most accurate things I've ever read. This isn't word for word but it went something like...
"1980 - 'More like Saturday Night Dead. I miss Belushi and Gilda.' 1985 - 'More like Saturday Night Dead. I miss Eddie Murphy.' 1995 - 'More like Saturday Night Dead. I miss Dana Carvey and Phil Hartman.' 2000 - 'More like Saturday Night Dead. I miss Farley and Sandler.' 2005 - 'More like Saturday Night Dead. I miss Will Ferrell.' 2010 - 'More like Saturday Night Dead. I miss Andy Samburg.'" ...
