In the spirit of this forum: I hope Alan's new HTF is state of the art has I am sure it is. I'm a long time member too and don't remember this happening prior to Alan but like someone else posted, it has, so condolences to those we know and those who we dont know. :frowning:
R.I.P. My condolences go out to his family. I liked Alan...He always gave good responses in the threads I started, and he was just a good poster in general.
My heart goes out to his family, who must have appreciated Alan's cleverness and kindness far more than we ever could. I hope they can find peace soon.
That's very sad news indeed. Alan was a long-term member on this forum, and sort of our eBay specialist. His posts were always clear and factual, not from a "softy", and generally full of good information. A personality.
The last time he posted here, must have been a week before he died. May he rest in peace.

PS: This is one of the uneasy aspects of the internet communities. Someone may get ill or even die, and you may only incidently hear about it - or never at all. Indeed we have had a few more in the past, of rather active members who suddenly "disappeared". Or who said they were getting older and/or ill, and never posted after that. If we have no means to contact someone (except through the forum) we may never learn what happened. Sometimes it takes time before you realize you never see a post anymore of him/her. You just wonder what happened. C.
Several years ago, I was outbid on an eBay auction for a laserdisc. Shortly thereafter, I received an e-mail from a gentleman offering to sell me the same LD for my maximum bid. Since this transaction would have to occur outside of eBay's auspices, I was wary, and asked for advice here on the HTF's After-Hours Lounge. Imagine my surprise when Alan replied, "Hey, that was actually me." Having had nothing but good experiences selling and trading DVDs with other forum members, I had no qualms about purchasing the LD from Alan.
If it wasn't for Alan, I'd probably never have gotten my hands on that LD of The Wizard of Speed and Time, which is still unavailable on commercial DVD. What a great guy.
I'm very sorry to hear about Alan passing away... I wish his family the best and I bet he knows how the show "Lost" wraps up now before all of us do. ;0
Allan died on a walk with his dog. As good a way as any to exit. Alan and the dog shared the name, "Moose". Here's a post he sent us back in January of 2005.
"Last July we adopted "Moose", a 4 year/9 month old, 80 lb. lab/shepard mix dog, from a shelter. We were looking for a an older dog who was calm and and non-aggressive, in contrast to our previous dog who attacked nearly everyone, including us sometimes, and this one seemed to fill the bill. A real charmer. Everyone, adults and children, liked Moose and Moose seemed to like everyone. For many months he was exactly what I wanted. I finally had a dog I could take everywhere without fear he'd attack or bite!
That was then. Since then Moose has become very much my dog. Too much my dog - he's become extremely protective of me and our home and has gotten aggressive towards strangers on his walks and anyone who enters our house, even those he knows. It's not just exuberance. He means to attack (you can tell). He's a big, strong, quick dog and it's inevitable that he'll bite someone. I cannot keep a dog with that potential.
The shelter we adopted him from didn't know much about Moose when they took him in. As a reason for surrender, the former owners said he had a tendency to run (he doesn't), but that is all they said. He had been an outdoor dog but we made him into an indoor dog. Moose seemed to make a successful transition - he didn't even need to be housebroken. We noted one odd thing - he wouldn't play. Won't chase a ball or stick, won't roughhouse, won't anything. I have a theory that his former owners simply kept him in his kennel from a pup and never socialized him and rarely interacted with him at all.
Anyway, anyone have any suggestions about curing Moose of this aggessiveness he's developed? I don't know what I've done wrong. We've never hit or been mean to him in any way, rarely yell at him, pet, scratch and talk to him all the time, given him treats and rawhides to chew every day, etc. Treated him like a member of the family. But if I can't change his behavior pretty quickly, I'm going to have to give Moose up to the shelter.'
