I was reading some news about how Ewan McGregor is now on the short list for the James Bond role. And I think that would be a perfect choice. I may be a little biased, as McGregor (along with Mr. Depp) is currently my favorite actor working today.

Then that got me to thinking about who Ewan McGregor could have played in the LOTR trilogy (Faramir ;) ) and that then led me to this idea:

Re-cast the trilogy!

Here are the rules:

Name who you'd have chosen for the roles listed below. Please understand that I adore the "real" cast down to the guy who played Haldir SoonDead, so this is not a knock on Jackson's cast in any way, shape or form. It's just something to kill the time while snow falls in Philadelphia.

Here's a twist: You cannot mention an actor who has been previously chosen in the same role. Example: if I chose Toshiro Mifune for Gandalf, you cannot repeat that pick although you could pick Mifune for another role if you wanted to.

Once we get a good amount of picks for each role, maybe I'll do a competition-type thing so we can vote on the best choices. Or maybe I'll just be lazy and slow like I am on all my Polls threads.

These picks took some time to come up with! Most of 'em are who I'd enjoy seeing, but some (like my Elrond pick) just made me laugh when I thought of 'em. If you'd like to participate, please make picks for ALL the characters listed below. Thanks.

Here's my picks:

Gandalf - Sean Connery

Saruman - Donald Sutherland

Aragorn - Kurt Russell

Frodo - Tobey Maguire

Samwise - Seth Green

Merry - Sam Rockwell

How about...

Monty Python and the Lord of the Rings

Let's see... each Python would probably play around 10 parts each.

Lord of the Rings 3000

Cast of Mystery Science Theater 3000. Bill Corbett as Crow as Frodo...

Whose Ring is it Anyway?

Colin Mochrie as Gandalf. Greg Proops as Aragorn. :D

Uh, ok. Anyway, now that last night's buzz has subsided, there are still a couple of choices I stand by (not that the casting of the actual LOTR is in any way impeachable). I think Crowe's brooding physicality would've made for a great Aragorn. I'm likewise still pleased with Stamp as Saruman, Hoskins as Gimli, Hopkins as Bilbo, and Kidman as Galadriel. What has held up less well, in the cold light of sobriety, is Winona as Arwen and Leo as Legolas (though he is suitably 'girly'). WHAT WAS I THINKING!!?? :)

Martin, love your list! "The Lordz of The Ring" Though I would've cast Gary Coleman as Frodo (or Gollum).

Merry - Bernie Mac = Inspired!

George, I've been thinking about a 60s version of LOTR starring the Beatles too! I know the Beatles originally wanted to play some specific parts like George as Gandalf, but really, that's just crazy. Especially when they're just perfect as the four hobbits! Couldn't think of actors for some characters towards the end of my list so I just went with George's picks. :)

Frodo- Paul McCartney
Sam- Ringo Starr
Merry- John Lennon
Pippin- George Harrison
Gandalf- John Huston
Saruman- Anthony Quinn
Aragorn- Sean Connery
Legolas- Robert Redford
Gimli- Rod Steiger
Boromir- Charlton Heston
Elrond- Henry Fonda
Arwen- Jane Fonda
Theoden- Alec Guiness
Eomer- Peter O'Toole
Eowyn- Julie Christie
Gollum- Anthony Hopkins
Faramir- Paul Newman
Denethor- Laurence Olivier
Bilbo- Benny Hill
Galadriel- Audrey Hepburn
Celeborn- Cary Grant

I definitely like some of your choices better, and I'll admit it makes more sense to have them as the 4 hobbits, but John really wanted to play Gollum. :)
