Question on aspect ratios (1 Viewer)

I know that configurations like 1.35:1 simply means the width is 1.35 times the height.

But in technical terms, what does 4:3 and 16:9 mean? I know they represent widescreen & fullscreen, but please put it into technical wording - I have a hard time understanding what they represent.

4:3 is 4 units wide by 3 units high.
16:9 is 16 units wide by 9 units high.

16:9 can also be represented (approximately) as 1.78:1.
(1.78*9=16.02, 1*9=9; 1.78:1 = 16.02:9)

They are simply ratios of width to height. Nothing more technical than that.

They mean the same thing. "4:3" means that the screen is 4 units high vs. 3 units wide. Divide both sides of the equation by 3, and it becomes 1.33:1, which is the aspect ratio of a standard TV screen.

OK, thanks for the info.

I'm doing a speech in speech class on the differences between Widescreen & Fullscreen and am going to incorperate aspect ratios into it. So you've been a good help.
