Greetings,
I would appreciate some help in deciding what to do for a 5.1 home theatre system. I have approx $800 CAD to spend.
We recently finished our basement and, of course, made a media room. I was smart enough to prewire for surround speakers and figure out my layout before I built the room. The room is relatively small at 15'x15'. It connects behind to a pingpong room. I currently have the stereo that I have had for 8 years or so. A Technics amp that has simulated surround sound capabilities with 2 huge 12" tower mains. I currently don't have a 5.1 setup but I want one. The question is, should I get a quality home theatre in a box or should I add speakers to my huge tower mains?
Option #1:
Home Theatre in a Box:
I have been looking at the Yamaha YHT9505xm system (I'm not aloud to post links yet but check the yamaha website). I don't need a dvd player as I'm running my xbox360 for dvds and games(i also have digital satellite). The Yamaha system looks good at $800 CAD. I was talking to a bestbuy rep about my speaker dilemma and he said that the positives about a HTIB is that the speakers are fine tuned to work with each other. If were to mix and match speakers, although more powerful, I could loose some dynamics.
This option would also increase my media room space as I wouldn't have my big mains taking up space. I could also bring my mains and old receiver into another room and have a system there.
Options #2:
Add to the Technics 12" Mains:
I know Technics isn't a great brand, but the mains sound good. If I were to get a full system, I would be adding to the mains with the possibility of upgrading the mains in the future to match the rest of the system. My current technics receiver must go so I would have to purchase:
a) a new receiver
b) new bookshelf surrounds
c) centre channel speaker
d) bass. The bass in my mains might be enough so I might not need this.
I looked at Visions and talked with the rep there. He figured it would cost around $800 CAD to get:
a) polk M30 surround speakers
b) polk CS1 centre channel
c) a decent ONKyo receiver
What should I do? Should I get an above average HTIB or should I piece together my system?
Do you have any other suggestions for a quality HTIB other than the Yamaha YHT9505xm?
