PS3 looks better in 1080i than 1080p, also anyone try component? (1 Viewer)

I think my PS3 looks better in 1080i than in 1080p. Why is this? and does anyone else notice the same thing?

Also has anyone compared component vs. HDMI on a PS3. I ask this because my XBOX add on looks significantly better (King Kong, Superman Returns, V for Vendetta) than my PS3 (Sopranos, Ice Age, Talladegga NIghts), and its really frustrating me.

How old is your Samsung DLP? The first generation of those 1080p TVs couldn't accept a 1080p signal but rather would do better to take a 1080i signal and let the TV upscale it to 1080p. If it's a first generation 1080p TV, it may be taking that 1080p signal, downconverting it to 540p, and then your TV is upscaling it to 1080p which is definitely going to look poorer.

If the TV is one of the newer models that accept 1080p signals, then I can't answer.

TALLADEGA NIGHTS has been reviewed across the board as a lackluster Blu-ray transfer. Look at THE SEARCHERS, FANTASTIC FOUR, ENEMY OF THE STATE, KINGDOM OF HEAVEN, THE LAST SAMURAI, and you shouldn't see anything deficient about those Blu-ray transfers.

IT also helps to look at identical titles. It's hard to compare those HD-DVD titles on a one-on-one basis to those in BD because of different stylized looks, film stocks, post processing, reliance on digital effects, etc.

If you have the same title on BD/HD-DVD then you can figure out if the PS3 side really is inferior.

Ah, well, I'm sorry; I have no idea why this is happening. I have a 720p 52" JVC, and I feed it the 1080i and let the TV scale it, and the results for most discs have been superb. (As I said earlier, only TALLEDAGA NIGHTS has had a disappointingly flat picture, but I haven't read a single positive review about that transfer on Blu-ray).

Something must be up. I'm using a 61" 87W 1080p Samsung of the same vintage. The PS3 looks spectacular when sending 1080p to the set. By sending it 1080i you are in effect getting 540p since the Samsungs are in the league of displays that seem to bob 1080i rather than weave it and use inverse-telecine to get back your full 1080p signal. Very few sets do this right. Perhaps in the 2007 models the manufacturers will add proper scalers.

On the newer Samsung 1080p sets be sure to send 1080p to it. And I don't think it accepts 1080p/24, just 1080p/60. If you have HDTV or another source that's only 1080i you will have to first send the video through an outboard video processor that can do 1080i motion adaptive inverse-telecine and field weaving to 1080p and then send it into the Samsung for the best PQ.

I did use component at first, (until my new HDMI cable arrived) and to me, the HDMI PQ is just a tad better.

The 1080p is definitely not similar to 540p. I just noticed that there is less background grain with 1080i than 1080p. If you get around to it put your set up into 1080i and compare and let me know (Sopranos is a good BD to test this out).

When I have the PS3 set for 1080p the Samsung says I am getting 1080p/60.

You sort of lost me with the "outboard video processor"....

Help!!! I am not very good with this stuff. I want to get a 1080p TV, but can't quite get myself to pull the trigger yet. I want to get a PS3 (have the funds set aside now). I have a Panasonic CT-34WX54 (1080i) TV. It has an HDMI input. What will happen with Blu-Ray DVD's? I understand they are 1080p, but will they display at 1080i on my current TV (I kind of understand the issue with 720p games for the PS3).

Any responses would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, the PS3 will output BD playback in 1080i via HDMI...just not in 720p. 720p-only HDTVs will have to settle for 480p (for the time being).

When setting up my PS3, what resolution(s) do I enable? Do I only enable one of them? Or do I enable all of them?

1080p

I have a 720p Panasonic Projector...

I have read some folks saying to make sure to disable the 720p...and just use 1080...so i'm just curious...

If your projector will accept 1080p (look at the manual, or try it for kicks; you won't damage anything if it can't) you want to check that, 480p, and 1080i only. Leave 720p unchecked. I'll repeat: leave 720p unchecked.

Let the projector do the downconversion internally.

Each input needs to be calibrated differently. It's not one setting fits all. My PS3 output to my TV was much much darker than what my component DVD player was sending. My XBOX 360 is different yet again.

PS: I find most of the DLPs somewhat soft compared to LCoS like the SXRD sets.
