About every 5-6 months I think about changing up my sig to remove the Anamorphic Widescreen logo. And like clockwork a thread like this shows up and makes me think otherwise.

The whole issue surrounding OAR has only been exacerbated with HD 16x9 format displays. It used to be only S&P issues we were concerned with, but the new 16x9 formats have now brought 'stretch' to the table. So we can now 'stretch 4x3 format content into a distorted 16x9 image.

It seems that every place I see a HD display, at a friends house, at a bar, the airport, everywhere, this has become the new common practice. Just watch a hour of two of TNT HD and you will find they do a variation of the stretch for you.

I must admit to using stretch when watching the history channel or the discovery channel, but its really only to avoid burn in on my 2 month old plasma TV (I don't have high def cable yet).

I find the 'stretch' variation on Pan and Scan harder to watch than plain old pan and scan disks.

I hate black bars too! I paid good money for my television and I want every inch of the screen used!

I hate buying groceries too! The boxes and jars are never full. I paid good money for these containers and I want them completely filled!

I refuse to drive my car unless every seat is occupied. I paid good money for these seats and I want them completely filled.

Etc......

I never quite understood the black bar haters.

Nor did I, Todd, not ever.
And to "solve" the problem of not using a part of the screen they payed for, they literally cut off a piece of the movie they payed in full!

That's also what I say to those people: but you payed for the whole picture, and they're only giving you 44% of it in that version!

Well to be fair often times I'm not actually watching it as much as listening too it. Also I the stretch on my TV makes it so the middle of the screen is stretched very little and the sides are compressed more. So if someone is in the middle of the screen they look pretty normal....however panning shots look pretty weird. But like I said I'm only doing it to try and avoid burn in. I noticed in the first few weeks I had the TV I was getting a little burn in lines from 4x3. If I'm actually watching a movie or something I care about I don't use the stretch feature.
The good news is I have a "wipe" feature that helps get rid of mild burn in.

So, what CE company will be the first to introduce the "Self Adjusting OAR TV Screen" to the masses? (To be sold exclusively at Wal-Mart, of course!)

I used to stretch 4:3 'junk' material when I had my RP tv a few years ago in order to avoid burn. I really dont care if the evening news or Stay Free tampon commercials are not in their proper OAR. I know some extreme purists have a problem with that but my $5k tv is more important to me.

But when it comes to movie watching...OAR is the only way. I would never dream of stretching Gone With The Wind

Hasn't the video burn in been solved? I haven't kept up with this too much since I rarely watch anything that's not 16x9 but I was under the impression that this issue has, for the most part, been resolved and that it has now become an overblown concern (no pun intended).

It is still an issue with plasma TVs. Particularly in the first 200 hours of operation. I started to notice a little bit of the lines showing after watching 4x3 material for a few hours. Also started to see the lines where the black on the top and bottom of 2.40:1 films were. But I did have to put on a flat grey screen to be able to see it. There is a wipe feature on my TV that puts up a 100% white screen to help eliminate any burn in.

Doug

Edit: its mostly an issue when people have the contrast turned up way too high.

On one hand, I wish HD formats would become mainstream...simply so the price would come down and I could afford it! On the other hand, if the future of the formats are decided by these guys, we are in trouble. I went to SAMS club and most of their DVD titles were in...FULLSCREEN!!! I tried explaining to my roomates what anamorphic was, and how to change the aspect from 4:3 to 16x9 on my projector...and they still keep asking me why "FAMILY GUY" is stretched, or why Casino Royal looks squeezed even though it fits the screen. On the other hand, they think I'm a nerd. OH well.

Yeah I don't use factory presets. Those are just there to sell the set in the show room.
