Hey guys, hope this is the right area for this kinda question. Basically, my friend is having some problems with this RPTV. I told him about this forum and he asked me if I would post this for him. Basically, there is a high pitch sound coming from his tv. He says that it went down alittle in volume when he adjusted the color/brightness down. Sucks cuz his extended warranty just expired 2 months ago.

Here is some info that he sent me about the tv.
54" Phillips/Magnavox projection TV
model # 8P5431 C101
chassis model # PTB805-AH01
3.00 amps
manufactured 9/98

symptoms - high pitched noise (like a dog whistle) that gets worse with lighter/whiter images in picture. Volume has no effect on problem.

Does anyone have any basic insight on what it could be? I'm sure he's gonna have to have it serviced. Hope it doesn't cost too much...

It's normal. All CRT-based televisions, direct-view or rear-projection, do this to some extent. Some people can't even hear it, while others are especially sensitive to it (I am).

If he notices a slightly reduced whistle noise when he lowers the contrast and brightness, perhaps he should keep those lower adjustments.

Yeah - it's that 15kHz sweep frequency. Sony Wegas are notorious for having this problem occur to a higher degree about a year into their working lives. I think bigger televisions (27-32+)in general have more of these problems.
