Problem with new VCR not accepting tapes (1 Viewer)

About six months ago, my 10 year old VCR gave up the ghost. So I bought a new Panasonic - nothing fancy. As I was looking at my VHS library this weekend, I noticed the new VCR wouldn't accept a handful of tapes I made. Mind you, these tapes played fine in a circa 1989 VCR I have.

Any reason why a tape would play in one VCR and not the other? Any idea for a work around? I really only need to view a few of these tapes one more time when I transfer them to a recordable DVD. Any ideas would be appreicated.

Thanks.

What do you mean by "accept?"
Can't insert cassette?
Tape won't load AFTER cassete is loaded?
Tape will load, but stops before playback begins?
