Just out of curiosity, does anyone here know what professional authoring houses use software-wise to put dvd's together?

I believe that Sonic Scenarist is the "de facto" standard, but don't quote me on that. Don't even think about using it for home unless you intend on putting up a second mortgage.

Every house I know uses Scenarist for the true top-level Hollywood studio level DVDs.

It runs about 5 figures

Like everything else at that level of production, this piece is not just some program installed on a PC: this is a "system" with specific hardware and software elements.

This is not something you can just buy a CD and install.

It looks like depending on the features you get, Scenarist runs anywhere from $15k - $40k. Yikes! Hard to believe this is from the same guys who make the 'MyDVD' package that came with my Pioneer.

Technically yes, but it was very recently purchased by Sonic from Daikin :)
And it's a TOTALLY different product. I do believe that you can get software-only Scenarist (in fact I'm 99% sure) but if you're actually looking for a pro production environment the software version takes a long long time to render in comparison
