Hi
I have just purchase a Panasonic portable cd/mp3 unit but I connected it up to my Denon 3803 amp via the line out and the sound is much softer than when I play music through my regular cd player through the same amp. How can I get the volume up (maybe a better cable?)

Try using the headphone out jack instead and adjust the volume on the portable appropriately (not too high, not too low).

Hi
I tried the headphone out and adjusted the volume to full but it still doesn't play loud. Any other ideas?

A pre-amp, but that seems like overkill. Short of something like a bad cable, I'd suspect the gain on you MP3 files might be too low. A great tool for adjusting this is MP3Gain available at www.geocities.com/mp3gain. I have my "target" gain set to 92dB.
