FULLY RESTORED TO ITS ORIGINAL GLORY, CECIL B. DEMILLE’S TIMELESS CLASSIC ARRIVES ON DVD FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER

    SAMSON AND DELILAH

Academy Award® Winning Biblical Tour de Force Debuts March 12, 2013

HOLLYWOOD, Calif. – Legendary director Cecil B. DeMille’s epic masterpieceSAMSON AND DELILAH makes its long-awaited DVD debut on
March 12, 2013 from Paramount Home Media Distribution. Starring Victor Mature and Hedy Lamarr in the title roles, SAMSON AND DELILAH tells the story of the Bible’s fabled strongman and the woman who seduces and betrays him. The film brings to life Samson’s incredible feats, including his battle with a lion, his single-handed assault on a thousand Philistine soldiers, his struggle with a giant and finally the spectacular climax in which he pulls down the pagan temple. But it is Delilah’s quest for revenge and ability to bring down even the mighty Samson that drive this thrilling and powerful story. The lavish production earned five Academy Award® nominations and won for Best Art Direction and Best Costume Design. The film also stars venerable actors George Sanders, Angela Lansbury and Henry Wilcoxon.

Sometimes referred to as DeMille’s rehearsal for The Ten Commandments,SAMSON AND DELILAH was enormously popular around the world upon its release in 1949. Over 60 years later, the original film elements required significant work in order to return the film to the vibrant masterpiece that had so thrilled theater audiences. The original nitrate three-strip Technicolor negatives were scanned in 4K, and the three strip image was registered, cleaned and color corrected in 4K. In addition, DeMille’s original nitrate print was used in order to complete the original music overture and special effect work was done to clean up original optical images, a particularly tricky three-strip challenge. Finally, the original mono audio track was cleaned up and restored.
Interestingly, the restoration team noticed a shimmer effect in some of the scenes. Since they were simultaneously restoring Sunset Boulevard, they looked at production photos of Norma Desmond’s visit to the SAMSON AND DELILAH set and saw the enormously powerful lights that were required for the Technicolor production. This explained the shimmer effect, which was left intact.
Arriving just in time for Easter, the SAMSON AND DELILAH DVD will be presented in full screen with English Mono Dolby Digital, French Mono Dolby Digital and Spanish Mono Dolby Digital, as well as English, French and Spanish subtitles.

Hallelujah! I was beginning to wonder if this would ever happen! I hope they keep Victor Young's overture that they had on the laser disc. Now, the anticipation until March 12th begins.
No extras are listed but a short interview with the film's sole surviving star, Angela Lansbury, would have been nice. But no complaining now. It's finally coming, that's all that matters.

I cant imagine that Paramount would not release this on blu-ray. It deserves the best possible presentation.
SUNSET BOULEVARD has just been given the deluxe BR treatment and though not a masterpiece , SAMSON AND DELILAH is one of the great technicolor films . There are a lot of possibilities for extras too including the isolated music and effects track(which appeared on laserdisc).

Some copies of Samson and Delilah have been seen on the shelves of Walmart for $14.99; I've noticed this a couple of weeks ago. Check your local Walmart!

I can't help thinking that sales will be disappointing. Fans of old movies tend to be Blu-ray snobs (I know I've become one!). I'm sure this is to do with Warner distributing the Paramount Blu's, & I'm happy to wait 'till Warner release it, it shouldn't be that long.

I can't speak about sales but I've noticed that the biggest fans of blu ray aren't fans of old movies but fans of the big current Hollywood blockbusters. Stuff like The Dark Knight Rises, The Avengers, Lord Of The Rings etc. Movies with lots of special effects and CGI. I have no interest in blu and I'm a huge fan of classic cinema. The success of the Warners Archives shows that fans of old movies are happy to get old movies however they can.

Blu-ray and old movies can go hand-in-hand. I'm not too crazy about new stuff and really like old and classic movies (especially 50s and 60s stuff), but love Blu-ray! Wow, watch something like The Ten Commandments (and hopefully Samson & Delilah soon) in Blu-ray and you will be astounded. Blu-ray is not just for fans of modern-era films.
