Overrated: Everything under the sun that I dislike

Underrated: Everything in this world that I like

I think that pretty much sums up the true meaning of these overused words. :D

I totally agree with Jim. "Overrated" and "underrated" have no bearing on anything beyond what the speaker likes vs. what he perceives popular opinion to be. They're words that tend to spark those tedious, endless "opinion vs. fact" arguments because their connotation is objective but their true meaning is always subjective.

*evil snigger* aaah guys this thread was getting really enjoyable when it skewed off onto that 'kids' tangent, who was it that said 'I love children, but I couldn't eat a whole one'?

Overrated: Independant and foreign films
Absolutely, just add the word 'extremely' to the start of that sentence, make it perfect.:emoji_thumbsup:

Underrated: Hundreds and hundreds of enjoyable US/UK movies, sneered at by the film snob elite over the past 80 years.

Gosh, can't you like'em both? There seems to be this implicit dichotomy that presumes if one likes one group of films you are automatically predisposed to dislike the other.

Too bad Julie doesn't pop in to this thread and make some mildly snarky kid comments. :)

Edit: Just to be clear, the "you" is a generic reference to enthusiasts and is not directed at any individual.

I had posted that I wan't exactly certain as to the meaning of both terms. Is there a real definition? I understand that it has nothing to do with personal opinion, just because I like something doesn't mean that everyone should, but that's what I base my assumption of the word "Over-Rated" - I assumed it was to describe something that not everyone is interested in, but the ones who are believe that everyone should be.

Almost along the same lines as "Hype" - when the hype is more exciting than the actual action (or product), but I guess that falls into personal opinion as well... Ahhhh!

Overrated: I would say marriage too. My love and I have been together almost 21 years, and having an "officially sanctioned" marriage has never been important to us. We have our affairs in order so we have no problems legally. Our families stopped asking "when are you going to get married?" about 15 years ago :D.

Underrated: The singer/songwriter/musician Happy Rhodes. She's one of the most talented and interesting musicial artists in the US (if not the world) pretty near the level of Kate Bush and Peter Gabriel, and has one of the most breathtakingly gorgeous voices you'll ever hear. She has 10 albums out and has been thoroughly ignored by just about everybody, because she doesn't have a major label to promote her (and the labels that have expressed interest wanted to turn her into Madonna because they didn't know what to do with her the way she was, so she said no). It's really a shame. People are missing out on some wonderful music.
