Updated my list after seeing Road to Perdition.
Great movie, but it didn't crack my Top 10 (I have it as 14th best).
So not a major update by any means actually...

I've changed my list a bit. I saw The Pianist a second time and it moved up to my #2 of the year. It isn't that I think Punch-Drunk Love is "better" than The Pianist, but PDL touched the quirky romantic in me, and my love for it is shared in every way by my beloved husband, and that keeps it at #1.
I also saw City of God and was blown away. I put it at #5.
Far From Heaven (which I also saw a second time and was even more impressed by) was moved to the second tier.
To make room for FFF, I knocked Bowling For Colombine out of the next 10. It joins a large list of great movies I loved that couldn't fit onto either list.
Here's my list again, updated. It's very fluid, because I don't *really* like Frailty more than The Two Towers, or Sunshine State less than Adaptation. This is why I hate absolute lists. They change depending on what I'm watching or thinking about at the moment.
1. Punch-Drunk Love
2. The Pianist
3. Adaptation
4. Rabbit-Proof Fence
5. City of God
6. Frailty
7. Real Women Have Curves
8. Sunshine State
9. Chicago
10. The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
Next 10 (in no particular order)
Far From Heaven
The Hours
Catch Me If You Can
25th Hour
Frida
Gangs of New York
The Good Girl
The Man From Elysian Fields
Minority Report
Solaris

Updated: Added 13 Conversations about one thing (#9), kicked Adaptation out of the top 10. It was at #9, logic dictates that it should now be 10, but there is no way Frailty is leaving that list ;)

I figured I should probably get around to etching the final version of my list, so consider it done. Talk To Her bumps Bowling For Columbine out of the Top 10 and into the Honorable Mentions. Frida and The Hours fall out of the HMs for BFC and The Quiet American.

  1. Position
  2. Film Title
  3. Total Score: A summation of each film's position in each contributor's top 10, with points given as follows: 1st place = 10, 10th place = 1. 10th place ties get .5 points per tie, limit to 2. All ties above 10th place get full points in each position, so long as the total points for the contributor does not exceed 55 (10+9+...+1); if that happens, remainder of tie will be divided like they were 10th place.
  4. Fractional Weighted Total: The total combined fractional weighted scores of each contributor's film. Fractional weighted scores are computed for each contributor by the position of the film against the total number of films seen -- i.e., if a contributor saw 50 films, 1st place is 50/50 (1.00), 10th place is 41/50 (0.82). This gives more weight to lists with higher film totals.
  5. Top 10 List Appearances : 2002 Film List Appearances: Ratio of a film's appearance in this thread to how many appearances it makes in contributors' lists in the 2002 Film List thread. This gives better value to the Weighted Average (and Total Score) numbers.
  6. Weighted Average: Total Score divided by Top 10 List Appearances. This is considered weighted because it only takes into account those contributors who have the film in the top 10.
  7. Unweighted Average: Total Score divided by total number of Top 10 contributors (currently 82).

  • Declan, LennyP - List can only contain 2002 FILMS (there were a few other people with one or two platform-pushover titles, which I've let go for the time being)
  • Angelo.M - Must have 10 titles in the list, and at least 35 seen from 2002
  • Luc D - You'll need an order to your list)

Okay everyone,
See? Told you I didn't forget about you guys. With a few weeks to go to the Oscars, I've cleaned up this thread, temprorarily stuck it, and opened up the thread to you guys!
So if you're unclear about the first post, let me know. Basically, go into your posts and under your lists, place your Top 5 choices for each category by preference.
Which, of course, means that all of those who have posted a Top 10 list are eligible. :)
If you have any questions, feel free to contact myself or Dana.
Jason

Michael,

I'm really not sure if a Documentary category would be ideal, because a majority of the film lists here do not even mention them, nor have many documentaries even been readily available (besides "Bowling For Columbine", of course).

If you guys feel it should be added, let me know.

I really, really, want to see if Standing In The Shadows Of Motown can upset the second-most overrated movie of the year.

For these categories, is it based on a performance in one film or all of their performances of the year? In other words, if I liked multiple supporting performances by say John C Riley(Chicago, GoNY, Good Girl, and Hours), would I put him on my list once or multiple times?

You're right... most of the lists here have "at most" 5 documentaries included anyway, so coming up with the best 5 would be trivial and contribute little. I, myself, watched only around 8-10 documentaries in 2002, but I'll probably include my 5 favorite in my post.
