My apologies to Dana for my wacky list :)
The damn thing just got way out of hand , and i kind of lost intrest in updating it. I guess seeing every crappy movie in the year does that to you :)

Hi Bill!
S'okay, I'm sorry too for using you as a lesson object :)
I'm still boggled over how you manage to see over 300 films in a year -- I struggle to find time for 50 of them (and this year the sucky thing is, I've only managed just ONE film for 2003). Do you catch most of your films at festivals, or watch a lot of them for the first time on DVD?
Just curious :)

I was unemployed for 9 months of last year , so i had way too much time to be at Film Festivals , Video Stores on Tuesday and theatres on Saturday :).

Hehe... yeah, those film festivals are fun aren't they? :) Although I didn't see as many films as Bill, I'd say that 20-25% of the films that I saw in 2002 were seen during two 10-day festivals. Man, if only I could attend Cannes, Sundance, Toronto, etc... :D
On a side note, it seems that I'm like the only member here who didn't love "Spirited Away". I did enjoy it (although, not as much as "Princess Mononoke") and I thought the animation was incredible, but I feel that I just didn't get as much out of it as everyone here. When I saw it, the theater was full of noisy little kids and babies crying, so maybe I should give it another chance when it comes out on DVD and watch it comfortably at home.

Added these four very good movies to my Honorable Mentions section: About a Boy, Chicago, The Pianist, and Talk to Her (Hable con Ella).

I switched the 4th and 5th places between 25th Hour(4th) and Harry Potter(now 5th). I also removed Signs from the list which moves GoNY, CMiYC, and Y Tu Mama Tambien up a spot. Adaptation moves back in to the #10 spot on my list.

Not the only one. However, I made the horrid mistake of going to the dubbed version, rather than the subtitled version. I thought the entire town had the subtitled one.

I finally got a chance to see the subbed version of Spirited Away...and it was "better" than the dubbed version...but the dubbed version is not terrible by any stretch; I can't see kids wanting to sit through anything subtitled, no matter how captivating the images on screen...I'm glad they did a decent dub with quality actors, now if only they'd released it in more than, oh I don't know, 5 theaters!!!

Well, I had no choice in the matter... the only version being shown here was dubbed. (In fact, I had seen "Princess Mononoke" dubbed in theaters as well.) In addition to the dubbed soundtrack, the poor viewing environment definitely affected my enjoyment of the film. (I had to change seats on more than one occasion because of annoyances in the theater.) Now I'm really looking forward to seeing the orginal version when it hits DVD.

  1. Position
  2. Film Title
  3. Total Score: A summation of each film's position in each contributor's top 10, with points given as follows: 1st place = 10, 10th place = 1. 10th place ties get .5 points per tie, limit to 2. All ties above 10th place get full points in each position, so long as the total points for the contributor does not exceed 55 (10+9+...+1); if that happens, remainder of tie will be divided like they were 10th place.
  4. Fractional Weighted Total: The total combined fractional weighted scores of each contributor's film. Fractional weighted scores are computed for each contributor by the position of the film against the total number of films seen -- i.e., if a contributor saw 50 films, 1st place is 50/50 (1.00), 10th place is 41/50 (0.82). This gives more weight to lists with higher film totals.
  5. Top 10 List Appearances : 2002 Film List Appearances: Ratio of a film's appearance in this thread to how many appearances it makes in contributors' lists in the 2002 Film List thread. This gives better value to the Weighted Average (and Total Score) numbers.
  6. Weighted Average: Total Score divided by Top 10 List Appearances. This is considered weighted because it only takes into account those contributors who have the film in the top 10.
  7. Unweighted Average: Total Score divided by total number of Top 10 contributors (currently 81).

Non-qualifying members:
  • Declan, LennyP - List can only contain 2002 FILMS (there were a few other people with one or two platform-pushover titles, which I've let go for the time being)
  • Angelo.M - Must have 10 titles in the list, and at least 35 seen from 2002
  • Luc D - You'll need an order to your list)

Notes:
  • Welcome Holadem, RafaelB, Dennis Pagoulatos, and Brian Ruth!
  • Some changes in the top 10: Adaptation. moves up a notch, as does Chicago and The Pianist.
  • Far from Heaven jumps a few, as Star Wars finally slips from the middle of the second tier it has held for so long.
  • There don't appear to be any new titles in the list.

I switched up some of the order of my Top 10 just now, with Bowling for Columbine moving up ahead of Gangs of NY and Rules of Attraction...
Check my original post for the changes!

I've never felt less capable of providing a year-end list than I do this year. It seems as though I've seen as many films as I ever do, but I feel like I've missed far too many to make this list in anyway representative. For example, I haven't seen "The Pianist", "The Hours" (did read the book!), "Chicago", "Russian Ark", "Corpus Callosum", "The Fast Runner", "Solaris (2002)", "Spirited Away", and probably 50 other, wholly worthy films. So, take this list with a very large rock of salt... and I hope I can revise it as I finally start to catch up!
