1946 wins. Tommy, you ask some good questions. And I agree with most people, that It's A Wonderful Life and High Noon are the two best of those films, making for a tough choice between years.

Next,

1981 vs. 1993

1981:
Chariots of Fire
Atlantic City
On Golden Pond
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Reds

1993:
Schindler's List
The Fugitive
In the Name of the Father
The Piano
The Remains of the Day

1981:
Chariots of Fire - good film but shouldn't have won
Atlantic City - don't see the appeal
On Golden Pond - bored out of my mind when I first saw it - never gave it another chance
Raiders of the Lost Ark - excellent, top notch, favorite film of all time
Reds - good film
Other noteworthy mention not on this list - Das Boot

1993:
Schindler's List - excellent, beautifully done film
The Fugitive - good action flick
In the Name of the Father - good film more of a biography
The Piano - blah
The Remains of the Day - good film
Where on earth is Groundhog Day and the Nightmare Before Christmas. Sure they wouldn't have won but they deserve to be there much more than the bottom 2.

My vote goes to 1981 due to the dropping of the ball in '93.

Tommy, Ikiru wasn't released in the US until 1956. Umberto D got a screenplay nom in 1957. Das Boot got 6 Oscar nominations including best director & screenplay

1981:
Chariots of Fire - meh
Atlantic City - good/very good
On Golden Pond - what I've seen over the years I've liked but have never seen it from beginning to end
Raiders of the Lost Ark - excellent
Reds - never seen

1993:
Schindler's List - excellent
The Fugitive - good/very good, starts better than it finishes
In the Name of the Father - never seen
The Piano - meh
The Remains of the Day - very good

1993

1981 - glad I didn't have to choose between Chariots of Fire and Raiders of the Lost Ark but 1981 because I like CoF more than Remains of the Day and Fugitive combined (though both are great films, especially the Fugitive)

1981:
Chariots of Fire - very good. BTW - Eric Liddell's widow used to live a short distance from me here in Ontario
Atlantic City - good
On Golden Pond - ok
Raiders of the Lost Ark - ok, I guess...never wild about it
Reds - good

1993:
Schindler's List - excellent
The Fugitive - good
In the Name of the Father - very good
The Piano - good
The Remains of the Day - excellent

1981 wins (would have been my vote - surprisingly I agree pretty much with Brook's evaluations if not his vote, not surprisingly, I disagree with most of Bill's :) )

Next,

1962 vs. 1971

1962:
Lawrence of Arabia
The Longest Day
The Music Man
Mutiny on the Bounty
To Kill a Mockingbird

1971:
The French Connection
A Clockwork Orange
Fiddler on the Roof
The Last Picture Show
Nicholas and Alexandra

1962:
Lawrence of Arabia - Great
The Longest Day - haven't seen
The Music Man - I've seen the first 30m or so 4-5 times and I've seen the end, but yet another film I've never watched all the way through.
Mutiny on the Bounty - haven't seen
To Kill a Mockingbird - excellent

1971:
The French Connection - good
A Clockwork Orange - Great
Fiddler on the Roof - haven't seen
The Last Picture Show - good
Nicholas and Alexandra - haven't seen

1971 because A Clockwork Orange's "Great" is 3-4x as "Great" as Lawrence's.

1962:
Lawrence of Arabia - good
The Longest Day - dull
The Music Man - toe-tappin' good
Mutiny on the Bounty - boring, the original is far better
To Kill a Mockingbird - very good

1971:
The French Connection - dull, uninteresting and naturally the eventual winner
A Clockwork Orange - magnifique! The film that made me consider movies seriously
Fiddler on the Roof - excellent
The Last Picture Show - good
Nicholas and Alexandra - good

1971

1962, because there are very few years that can stand up to the one - two punch of LoA and TKaM. Clockwork Orange and French Connection are great, but for me, even combined they aren't as high great as either of the 62 films I mentioned.

1971 wins, which would have been my vote. Bill has the right film descriptors, it's just that in most cases he's assigned them to the wrong films. For example, he's described the 62 winner perfectly, only he mistakenly put it after the 71 winner. :)

Next,

1979 vs. 1990

1979:
Kramer vs. Kramer
All That Jazz
Apocalypse Now
Breaking Away
Norma Rae

1990:
Dances with Wolves
Awakenings
Ghost
The Godfather: Part III
Goodfellas

1979

Love Goodfellas, but Part III is weak and I don’t like Dances with Wolves at All.

Apocalypse Now matches Goodfellas, with Breaking Away breaking the (almost) tie.

1979:
Kramer vs. Kramer - very good
All That Jazz - haven't seen
Apocalypse Now - outstanding
Breaking Away - haven't seen
Norma Rae - haven't seen

1990:
Dances with Wolves - dull, pretentious dreck
Awakenings - ok
Ghost - meh
The Godfather: Part III - haven't seen despite owning the DVD since it was released
Goodfellas - very good

1979:
Kramer vs. Kramer - an unconvincing and contrived acting exercise
All That Jazz - excellent, but non-toe-tappin' (just not that kind of musical)
Apocalypse Now - good, but ultimately an interesting failure
Breaking Away - forgettable
Norma Rae - all 'issues', no art or style

1990:
Dances with Wolves - horrible
Awakenings - good, touching even
Ghost - so good that I don't remember anything about it!
The Godfather: Part III - this was nominated for Best Picture????
Goodfellas - good

1979

Mainly for All That Jazz and the fact that 1979 was one of the few years that the Academy got the Best Foreign Language winner right...The Tin Drum

I must be the dissenting voice that loves Dances with Wolves and have since I was 8, when it came out.

1979 wins. I would have gone with 1990 since Goodfellas is head & shoulders above the other films listed.

Next,

1930 vs. 1960

1930:
All Quiet on the Western Front
The Big House
Disraeli
The Divorcee
The Love Parade

1960:
The Apartment
The Alamo
Elmer Gantry
Sons and Lovers
The Sundowners

Sigh! What a choice.. Quite a few yawners, but All Quiet on the Western Front and The Apartment are first rate.

1960 with Billy Wilder helping big time.
