Onkyo displays "PCM fs 48kHz"

    So what does the "fs" stand for?

    Fs is the standard abreviation for 'sample rate.' I'm not entirely sure where it comes from, but, well, there you have it.

    Probably sample Frequency. I've always wondered what the "s" stood for.

    sampling freq would be my guess, as that's what the 48khz defines.
