    SYNOPSIS

In a bold departure from his musical comedy roles, Mickey Rooney plays Little Joe Braun, a brash labor union boss who uses strong-arm tactics to evade a federal corruption probe. Two honest factory-workers—Steve Cochran (Private Hell 36) and velvet-voiced Mel Tormé—find themselves caught in the gang lord’s struggle for power, but come to realize they have the power to end Little Joe’s reign of terror...if they can survive Little Joe’s attempts to silence them.

A production from Albert Zugsmith (Touch of Evil, High School Confidential), the king of the tawdry B-picture, The Big Operator is a sublime specimen of Cold War-era noir, highlighted by the special appearances of pop culture icons Mamie Van Doren, Vampira, Jim Backus, and Jackie Coogan.

Filmed on location in and around the Everglades National Park, Raoul Walsh's Distant Drums is a rare example of the exotic "Florida Western." Gary Cooper stars as Cavalry Captain Quincy Wyatt, who leads a charge upon an old Spanish fort taken over by Seminole gun-runners and

kidnappers. After liberating the prisoners (among them Mari Aldon), Wyatt, pursued by the vengeful Seminoles, flees into the gator-infested swamps and settles his fate in a spectacular underwater fight with the vicious Chief Ocala (Larry Carper).

    SYNOPSIS

In this stunning Technicolor Western, Joel McCrea, Zachary Scott, and Douglas Kennedy star as three ranch-owners struggling to defend their livelihoods after the Civil War covers the nation in a dark cloud of lawlessness. When their Three Bell ranch is torched by Union raiders (led by Victor Jory), the partners split up. Price (Kennedy) enlists with the Confederate army, while Davis and Burns (McCrea and Scott) become gun-runners to rebuild their fortunes. During the ensuing dangers and romantic entanglements (in the form of Dorothy Malone and Alexis Smith), the three partners occasionally lose sight of their ranching ambitions, but never for a moment forget the face of the man who wronged them.

    SYNOPSIS

Regarded as one of the first and most famous sex symbols on the animated screen; she was a symbol of the Depression era and a reminder of the more carefree days of the Roaring Twenties. Her popularity was drawn larger from adult audiences and the cartoons, while seemingly surreal, contained many sexual and psychological elements. The queen of the animated screen returns to allure and entice audiences all over again in this fantastic volume-four compilation featuring many of her greatest adventures.

Betty Boop: The Essential Collection, Volume 4 includes 13 animated short films available for the first time on DVD and Blu-ray™: Stopping the Show (1932), Snow White (1933, featuring Cab Calloway), Parade of the Wooden Soldiers (1934), She Wronged Him Right (1934), Red Hot Mamma (1934), Poor Cinderella (1934, in color), There’s Something About a Soldier (1934), When My Ship Comes In (1934), Zula Hula (1937), Riding the Rails (1938), The Swing School (1938), Pudgy the Watchman (1938), Sally Swing (1938).

All 13 shorts were produced by Max Fleischer and directed by his brother Dave Fleischer. Featuring the voices of Mae Questel, Bonnie Poe and Margie Hines as Betty Boop. Also featuring guest voices of Cab Calloway, Jack Mercer and Rose Marie with music by Cab Calloway and His Cotton Club Orchestra.

Haven't seen any of these. The Big Operator is intriguing, I love Mickey Rooney noirs. None of the others are immediately jumping out at me.

I like both The Big Operator and South Of St. Louis so I'll buy them.

I've never seen Honour but the core premise sounds interesting, or at least could be interesting if developed properly. Has anyone a firm opinion of this film?

God, that's a shitty line-up of Boop cartoons. One of the all-time greatest cartoons managed to slip in almost by accident, seemingly...

It's their final volume of Boop cartoons, too, since they won't be doing the PD ones (or, should I say, the ones Paramount has determined to be PD).

This reduces the Paramount licensed titles to 25 BD/DVD releases and 6 BD upgrades.

And it seems they are now back on to a 4 Paramount titles per month schedule, which means they should finish 'em up around May-June 2015 (assuming they don't release anything in December like the last few years).

I remember my dad used to watch "Big Operator" on tv and he'd be sitting there cracking up. Lots of unintentional humor in there, I'd guess.

But my dad could never take Mickey too seriously. The family legend goes that my dad's aunt and uncle lived in the same building as Mickey Rooney and his mother back in the 40s. And my relatives would always hear Mickey yelling at his mom, so they'd open up the vent for a better listen. Stuff like "Aw, Ma, you're outta your mind!!" Too bad they didn't have recording devices in those days--they probably heard some good stuff!

So, they're letting DR. TERROR'S HOUSE OF HORRORS go without a Halloween Blu release for the second time since announcing this title...? Either that or they're cutting it really close...

Veterans Day in November? If they're releasing South of St. Louis that never even had a DVD release, I'm pretty sure a film with one of John Wayne's most famous roles is coming out soon too.

That, or they hold it all the way to Memorial Day 2015 would be my guess. It's easily the most marketable title of the 31 remaining, IMO.

There's some logic to the Memorial Day 2015 date. The Duke's 2 other WW2 films released by Olive were "The Fighting Seabees" in April 2013, then "Flying Tigers" in May of this year. Hopefully it won't be that long but it does seem to follow a pattern (if 2 can be called a pattern).

I watched Pony Express a couple nights ago. It has a lot of three-strip registration errors so it may be why there is no BD.

I jumped all over Distant Drums and South of St. Louis as the price will definitely increase before this time next week.

I can't believe that South of St. Louis is going to be on BD. Another Joel McCrea western classic with Zachary Scott playing his usual villain role, well, maybe not. ;)

+1Also might be in for "South of St. Louis" budget permitting. Have some TT titles coming out around that time I'm already in for ("The Blob", "Audrey Rose" and "La Bamba").
