Out of curiosity, just how far have people been able to develop their characters so far?
Marksman:

Intermediated Pistol
Advanced Pistol
Intermediate Carbine
Advanced Carbine
Intermediate Rifle
Advanced Rifle
Expert Rifle
Intermediate Range Support
Advanced Ranged Support

Scout:

Exploration I
Exploration II
Hunting I
Survival I

Those are the skills I have thus far. Hoping to get Rifle specialist over the weekend and move onto the Rifleman tree and master that bad boy. From there I want to move up the Exploration tree to move to Creature Handler and master that tree as well.

For those interested here is a nifty character builder:

Expert Pistol
Adv. Ranged support

Exploration I
Hunting II
Trapping III
Survival III

Engineering III
Survey IV

The weekend was very productive for me, and my playtimes happened to be outside of the rollbacks, so all in all I've been pretty lucky.

It's slow going now though.

It sounds like most of you are having fun. It seems that pretty much everyone is becoming a marksman or other fighting type profession. What good are the other classes such as the entertainer?

Entertainers for the most part entertain. They have the ability to dance and play music. This actually helps us fighter classes because as we fight in battle we get battle fatigue and mind fatigue (both of these stats are shown to you in game) which can only be cured by watching and cheering on the entertainers in cantinas or scout camps.

As we fighters watch and cheer them on they get XP, its also customary to throw a tip thier way for helping you out. Doctors work very similiar in that they have medical centers in the game where players can go to cure stat wounds (you get more wounds as you do battle, this affects stretgh, health etc..). Doctors can create stimpacks and heal. Its also customary to tip for these services.

There are also a myriad of artisan classes like weaponsmiths and armorsmiths which create weapons and armor and are the backbone of the fighter classes ability to get good armor because in SWG loot dropped by creatures (almost none) is no where near as good as player made items.

There are also architects which can with materials create deeds for you and sell those deeds to you. You then take that deed and place it in the world and it will "build" your house. Architects can also creat PA (Player Association or guild) housing. You need to buy a PA hall deed from an architect to create a PA.

I think most people naturally gravitate toward combat because it's what most games are about, especially people who've never played MMORPGs.

I think I would enjoy being a musician, but with one character per server I'm not ready to start yet. My wife will probably be an entertainer/crafter when she starts playing.

The nice thing about SW is that you can easily combine all or part of different skill trees. I'm going to be a Ranger with one branch of Architect--my combat skills are basically incidental (so I can kill things to harvest resources from them and for self-defense). Romier appears to be going for a more well-rounded fighting character, with scouting skills to support.

You won't see as much diversity right now because we're all just starting. Once people start to hit the elite professions, you'll see an incredible variety of character types. Many people will still have a combat skill though--it's a dangerous galaxy after all :)

I have to say, I frickin love this game. I have never played an MMORPG before and after playing SWG, I cant believe I have'nt stumbled across one before. I bought this game on the release day (after waiting for almost 2 years and playing the beta for the last 2 months) and was not even set back by the server problems on the first day..............and night. The next morning, a good 6 hours was spent getting into the game and exploring the planet. I have a Human Marksman on the planet Corellia named BIG STAN and Ive gotten him up to

Intermediate rifle
Intermediate carbine
Intermediate pistol
Intermediate ranged/combat

and basic artisan with survey I

Only know Ive gotten myself in between a rock and a hard place. Ive got no insurance and no cloning and only 32 credits in the bank. The new player freebie clonings are over so if I die one more time im not sure what happens to all my stuff. So im trying to do in town missions to earn credits and clone myself and insure my gear. I tried to do some destroy missions but every time I venture out I get killed by some animal that doesnt like me trying to kill his lair (go figure). I will be creating a character in starsider to join up with the HTF (server room willing) and go kick some butt. See you in the galaxy gentlmen.

Two things happen. Number one you will clone to an uninsured location which will result in MASSIVE wounds that will take at the very least 30-60 minuntes to heal completely. Secondly your items will remain on your corpse. You will need to do whats called a "corpse run" (ie going back to the location where you died, the game automatically sets a waypoint for you at that location) and reacquire your items.

Also if you are not able to do a corpse run you can have a friend do it for you by giving him the /consent command which, as it sounds, gives them consent to get your items or drag your corpse to you. Morbid:)

Can you learn new skill upgrades without using them in the 'field'? I have a marksman, got my first pistol skill last night and aquired three user weapons (a new pistol, carbine, and rifle). Do I need to kill things with the pistols to earn the skill points, then train, or can I train with someone to get the skills?

How do I heal normal hitpoints? Sitting works, but takes time. Are there med kits I can get?

I'm running on a Athlon 2400+ (2 ghz) and Radeon 9700 Pro. I have all the graphical options on (except shadows and detailed water) and the game looks great, and is pretty smooth. Upgrading from a Geforce Ti200 to a Radeon 9700 Pro has been my best upgrade in years. The image quality of the Radeon kills my old Geforce. I'm also running Galaxies with 4x antialiasing and 4x filtering (not sure the exact name). Galaxies looks great, but in a lot of cases, all the ground cover makes finding enemies hard. It looks good to the point of distraction.

Hey guys - I've played several more hours now and other than the (DAMMIT!) character rollbacks over the weekend... I'm having alot of fun. :) Playing as a surprise Marksman but on the Bria server - Starsider is too hard to get on and not a very good net connection for me either. So, heres the plan: You guys quit playing on Starsider, start char's on Bria, and help train me up so I can be the first Bounty Hunter on the server. O.k. Break! Go Team! ;)

I was only effected by one roll back, it wasn't much, but i lost 1600 credits, thats was a little upsetting, last night, june 30, did some rebel and destroy missions, game wasn't paying or giving right amount of fraction points, Logged on today, new patch, and the credits were there, happy about that.

while the game isnt 100% yet, i am having a blast playing it, considering i wans't even going to buy it because of what some people said, and once the issues are dealt with, which seems to be very quickly, the game will be that much more fun.

if anyone can't get on starstrider create a charcter on Gorath come to corellia, and look for Jurgen Wagner, or send me an in game mail message, i might be travelling :)

Anyone playing it on anything like a 800mhz p3 with a geforce 2? Curious to try it out but don't know if I should just wait till the end of the summer when I have a new PC and most of the bugs in the game should be worked out.

I'd defintely wait if I were you Mike. Its a real monster to run well and the minimum specs are a 933mhz to a 1gig. Youll be happier you did as youll get a better experience.

Mike, I would say it depends on your tolerance level. I'm currently playing with a 550mhz p3, geforce3 ti200. I have all the rendering options turned off, everything at the lowest setting, no bump-mapping, AA, etc. Naturally, I'm not seeing the same pretty pictures that others are able to.

I am fine in the wilderness, but cities can be a beast. It's 1 or 2 fps in most cases. I actually don't find this to be a big issue, because when I'm in cities I don't need to move fast. Definitely annoying, but not enough to make me stop playing. If I was factioned it would be impossible.

If you are used to playing FPS games at high frame rates, this game might drive you crazy on a slow computer.

Alright, Goddammit.

After promising myself I'd wait until it went on sale, the allure of "talking wounds" was too great.

I picked up SWG on my lunch break. I'll be online tonight after some MM3ing...

I'm so weak.

Damn Joel, I hope your able to get on Starsider. I have many wounds that are more than willing to talk!:)

Seriously though give the server a try and see if it lets you in. Keep trying too. Unfortunately it seems Starsider has hit its character creation cap.:frowning:

So Romier, you were pretty down on this game coming out of the beta, but you sound like you are playing quite a bit now. Have you changed your mind a bit? I have held off on buying this title so far based on your (and others') opinions that the game was not ready for release. This discussion has gotten me interested again though.

btw, Starsider was designted as the unofficial "official Role-Playing server", and 50+ pre-formed guilds intended to make that server their home.

All of the servers filled up rapidly, but Starsider is one that's pretty sure to maintain its load for the near future.

Hmm, there seems to be another patch as of today, July 1st.

And one of them is the group/xp/loot problem Romier was mentioning. I thought it was funny yesterday how out of the whole group, only the higher level players (like myself) were soaking most of the xps than the lower levels in the group. Hopefully this has been rectified.

Anyway, I'm still on Ahazi/Azahi server and will help anyone who is starting out on that server. A pure Marksman who may dabble in Artisan crafts because I want to make my own rocket launcher *hehehehe* when I reach commando status. The name is Chomy for anyone who is interested.
