Ooh, ooh - I'll start that discussion. So is Psycho a horror film? What about Alien? Does that count for the Horror Movie Challenge? Wait a sec, what about Ghostbusters or, or Nightmare Before Christmas? :)

Cheers,

Jason

I was making a joke based on Michael's comment. I've been doing this challenge for a few years now. And every year it's the same old thing with this question. That's what Michael was referring to and I was just running with it.

And I agree that Psycho and Alien are horror flicks, Alien being one of the best of all time. Speaking of horror flicks, I'm about to watch the Cat and the Canary. Heard great things about it over the years. Looking forward to it.

Cheers,

Jason

ha ha! I remember last year when a couple of horror pornos came up in this debate :P

for the record, I'm going with a grindhouse theme this year, and plan to watch a bunch of sexploitations, nudie cuties, roughies etc on top of the more standard monster and horror films. :D

It's up to the individual to include what he wants. I remember last year I watched Laurel and Hardy's A HAUNTING WE WILL GO for the first time, thinking it was a horror/comedy.... but it turned out not to be about horror at all, and I just didn't feel comfortable (for myself) including it, so I didn't. However -- one other year I watched a newer film called TAKING LIVES which I thought was going to be horror, but in the end it was a drama! Yet that year I did include it on my list! :)

Some people include audio commentaries or short subjects, but I prefer not to. It's all up to the individual, what he chooses to do. Last year I mentioned how many extra films I could have included, had I listed all the commentaries I watched, or movies I started but fell asleep through, or whatever. I just want to be clear that for me it's got nothing to do with "winning a competition"... there is no competition to me except to myself, to try and watch more movies than I tallied up the years before. I never expect to come in above 10th place or so in any given year, and if I did I'd have serious concerns about whether or not I had a life! :)

Oh, and for the record - Science Fiction films count for me ;)

I'm with you on the sci-fi thing.

It's not much of a competition for me, I just like reading about what all you guys are watching. it's a lot of fun, I don't think anyone takes it too seriously. :D

And as long as I don't "win" I'm good, as that means someone has less of a life then me. :P

Last year we had talked about maybe even having a separate SciFi Movie Challenge. It never came about. In fact I was the one who suggested it, but I lost sight of the idea as the year moved on and I became suddenly extraordinarliy busy with work. Maybe this year, we'll get around to doing it. Would be a fun one. But I have no problem with anyone counting SciFi films here in the Horror Movie Challenge. Really - everyone needs to put what they feel is right for them. I included commentaries and documentaries that were horror-related last year and the previous year. My reasoning was that it gives me more insight into the genre and that's what this challenge is for me.

Cheers,

Jason

I don't include drive-in sleaze, sci-fi movies or commentaries in what I'm watching but I have no problem with someone else doing it. As everyone has said, it's all for fun.

Although I've been holding off on re-watching a bunch of John Carpenter stuff so if I include sci-fi, I can add in Dark Star, Escape From New York, Starman, They Live and Escape From L.A. Hmmm. :)

The problem is that it's not always so simple to decide whether something is "horror" or "sci-fi". You'll find that opinions will constantly vary on that. Is it horror/scifi/fantasy/thriller.. etc...?

the way I cut is, if theres any type of alien / monster threat, I pretty much count it as a horror. I'm going with all eploitation, I'm actually thinking of starting the challenge with the series of "mondo cane" docs. they all have enough shock and squirmy moments to count. :P

Hey, everyone can do whatever they want. However, it is called the "Scary Movie Challenge." I understand the "live and let live" mentality, but if it just gets extended to all forms of Sci-Fi, Exploitation, Grindhouse and everything else anyone wants to count, the thread is just "Track the movies you watch" and there is already a thread for that. It would just be limited to October.

We're all here to watch horror/scary movies so if a person thinks a film falls into the month challenge then include it. I personally don't consider PSYCHO a horror film but I'd include it. Something like DEATH PROOF isn't really horror but that Grindhouse period it pays homage to is something else I'd include. Even the stuff of Franco, Mattai and other Euro Trash but not Euro Horror titles. The "Something Weird Video" type drive-in flicks is yet another thing I'd include.

Should Showtime's the Masters Of Horror series count? They're all stand-alone movies. But they're made for TV movies.....

I second the idea of the Sci-Fi movie challenge!

We counted them last year, so I don't see a problem. I plan on watching most of season 2 during this one. :)

I counted them last year too. Everyone involved in the show refers to them as movies and the run time is about the same as some movies from the 1930's or early 1940's so it makes sense to count them in my mind.
