I did just pitifully this year; I only managed 14 films, but I just really wasn't into it. Spending more time with my music these days...Still, on Halloween I played CITY OF THE DEAD (1960), courtesy of the excellent-looking VCI disc...City of the Dead (1960) ****Sorry, but this movie will still always be called HORROR HOTEL for me! Grew up with it scaring me on New York's CREATURE FEATURES around 1970... and all these years later it still hasn't lost its punch and remains a vital, atmospheric, frightening mini-masterpiece. Only got in three more movies on Halloween, but they were all good one's so I'm not complaining!

I haven’t seen this one in years, so it was a nice revisit on Scream Factory’s Bluray. It holds up even better than I remembered it, with a bunch of science nerds finding an device that might hold the devil. A nice blend of Lovecraftian horror and quantum physics that will make your head hurt if you think too hard on it, it’s a lot of fun and creep too.

I’m counting this as a first time viewing since my first viewing back on it’s Canadian VHS debut got boshed by me falling asleep within the first 15 minutes. Which isn’t to say that it’s a boring film, we started watching it late and I pumpkined out. Anyway, this is a top rate ghost story that is creepy and interesting. Another blend of fairy tales and horror by del Torro that is well worth your time.

I finished up the challenge with another classic Corman/Price picture. This one mixes in Lovecraft weirdness with the Poe, and is genuinely weird and scary. Price puts in another amazing performance in the lead as a man haunted and possessed by his warlock great grandfather. The supporting cast is equally good, including genre fave Lon Chaney Jr and the always entertaining Elisha Cook. The folks enjoyed it, but the possession plot was a bit too confusing for mum and I had to stop the film a couple times to explain that what was happening was 100 years later from the prolog that starts the movie. She kept thinking that Price was going insane. I bailed on attempting to explain Cthulu and the old gods….

I didn't get in as many first timers this time, mainly due to buying bluray upgrades to watch. That said, I enjoyed more films this time since I didn't beat my brains out watching dreadful oddball stuff I had never heard of. Which means I have to come back next year since I still have a couple dozen "Video Nasties" to watch!

Favourite New Discovery: "House" The crazy Japanese horror film. I'm still thinking about it, it really knocked my socks off. That "When Horror Came To Shochiku" set was really good too, I plan to force many a friend to watch "Goke, Bodysnatcher From Hell" and "Genocide"

Worst Watched: "All Night Horror Marathon Vol 1" from Scream Factory. Disc 1 wasn't great and disc 2 was an endurance test of the worst kind. I have Volume 2 sitting here, but reading about "Contamination .7" or whatever it was hasn't exactly lit a fire under my ass to get watching it. I think it might get tucked under the bed and forgotten... UNTIL NEXT YEARS CHALLENGE!

Biggest Letdown: Halloween II - Halloween was a film that was great beyond it's genre. I enjoyed II but it was far from the first one.

Stinker: Horror of the Zombies - In my opinion this was the worst film I've seen in this contest by a landslide
Best Film: House of Frankenstein - tempted to put Curse of Frankenstein on here as well, but I'm going to have to rewatch it as I caught myself dozing a few times

30/10/13: KILLER BEES {TV} (Curtis Harrington, 1974) **

The invasion of a community by a swarm of deadly bees was, for a time, a popular commodity in genre cinema: this was preceded by Freddie Francis’ THE DEADLY BEES (1966) and followed by THE SAVAGE BEES (1976; TV), its sequel TERROR OUT OF THE SKY (1978; TV) and Irwin Allen’s inflated all-star fiasco THE SWARM (1978). Frankly, I never understood this situation’s appeal, as the sight of people fleeing for their lives from badly-processed insects (as in the film under review) was always prone to elicit laughter as opposed to the intended terror! Anyway, here we get the added – but equally dubious – treat of having the leading family of the locale (after whom it is named!) as the bees’ keepers…or, rather as one of them opines, it is the other way round! In fact, matriarch Gloria Swanson (in her much-publicized TV debut) is constantly surrounded by them – until it is time to pass the baton to another, younger woman and, since her direct relations all happen to be male, her successor ends up being one of their number’s girlfriend (played by Kate Jackson, later one of TV’s CHARLIE’S ANGELS)! Still, the fact that the reason behind the African killer bees’ mass migration to the U.S. – apart from the declaration that their particular honey gives the “Van Bohlen” wine an extra sweet taste! – is never properly delineated hurts the overall effort (to say nothing of its credibility quotient).


30/10/13: DEVIL DOG: THE HOUND OF HELL {TV} (Curtis Harrington, 1978) **1/2

Director Harrington began as a film-maker with artistic – albeit derivative – aspirations (notably NIGHT TIDE {1961} and GAMES {1967}) but soon settled into being a solid purveyor of commercial properties, if not a downright hack. This one, too, seems to have drawn its inspiration from the many diabolical chillers of the era: the end result is all over the place, yet agreeable and certainly competent enough. It begins with the impregnation of a German Shepherd bitch by a demon(!), invoked following much chanting courtesy of a group led by Martine Beswick; the litter of puppies this unholy alliance produces is presumably spread across the country (or is it the globe?) by another of their number, i.e. R.G. Armstrong, but we only follow the fortunes of one such canine – owned by the family of hero Richard Crenna. Soon, the rest of the family falls under the mutt’s evil spell (cue more incantations and the painting of a demon head, which they presumably adulate) but not after it indirectly causes their superstitious maid’s fiery death and almost wills the protagonist to chop off his own hand in a propeller! Other victims are a friendly neighbor and his pet dog, and the children’s schoolmaster (it is before the latter that the titular creature first appears in its true hellish guise – and a scene I recall coming across as a kid on Italian TV!) but, aiding Crenna in his quest to overcome the forces of darkness, is a shaman (played by Victor Jory) he expressly visits in Latin America. Unsurprisingly, given its pedigree (no pun intended), the special effects during the climactic confrontation – which, for no very good reason, are set inside a power plant – leave much to be desired…but, as I said, the film ultimately makes for a decent way to kill an hour and a half (and that is all one really asks for out of such unassuming genre fare).


31/10/13: DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE {TV} (Alastair Reid, 1980) ***

This is among the better and more stylish versions of the classic horror tale, but one I was only aware of via a review of its R2 DVD on the estimable “Sight & Sound” magazine! Other TV renditions I have watched were those made in 1955, 1959, 1968, 1969, 1973 and 1990 – the first and fourth of these during the current Halloween Challenge. Like the 1960 Hammer adaptation THE TWO FACES OF DR. JEKYLL, Hyde is the handsomer, leaner persona – with the doctor’s features hidden under large whiskers, grey hair and a rather stout figure (the latter would plague leading man David Hemmings himself in real life, as well as guest star Diana Dors!); his alter ego, then, is not stereotypically evil and brutish, more the haughty, callous sort with a nasty streak running in him. The storyline is opened up to encompass most of the mores of Victorian society, inflating the running-time to nearly two hours, and making its affinity with Oscar Wilde’s “The Picture Of Dorian Gray” all the more pronounced. Curiously, Jekyll drinks a minimal amount of the potion to transform into Hyde but then the latter injects himself to revert back!; as for the unassisted metamorphosis, this occurs overnight while in bed (as in R.L. Stevenson’s original) – also lifted directly from the novella is his unprovoked assault on an old gentleman (played here by Desmond Llewellyn of 007’s Q fame!). The girl Hyde torments (to the point of suicide, again a` la DORIAN GRAY) is a housemaid, played by singer Toyah Wilcox(!), in Jekyll’s own employ – as in MARY REILLY (1996), which I almost included in this ongoing marathon; other notable cast members are Ian Bannen as Lawyer Utterson and Clive Swift as Dr. Lanyon.


31/10/13: FRANKENSTEIN {TV} (James Ormerod, 1984) **1/2

Mary Shelley’s horror perennial has attracted numerous talents to it over the years: this one is no exception, but the end result is largely unsatisfying and oddly forgettable! Robert Powell and David Warner (as creator and creature respectively) complement each other quite well, especially in their thoughtful (as opposed to physical) final confrontation. The latter’s burnt look (while not fitted with bolts in the sides of his neck a` la the classic monster make-up, he is still brought to life via electrical charges) seems to be derived from Christopher Lee’s messy visage in THE CURSE OF FRANKENSTEIN (1957), while also looking forward to Robert De Niro’s in MARY SHELLEY’S FRANKENSTEIN (1994). Carrie Fisher feels out-of-place here as Elizabeth, John Gielgud is wasted as the blind hermit, and Edward Judd turns up in yet another unrecognizable character role as a procurer of Frankenstein’s specimens. The essence of the tale is there, to be sure (in spite of the low-key approach)…though, at a mere 73 minutes, it comes off as rushed – with the film’s visuals also proving unappetizingly drab!

I'm also surprised by my high ranking...as there were several gaps over the month, and I certainly didn't reach my target of 3 movies per day! For the record, all 78 films I watched during this Challenge were FIRST-time viewings!
