Nielson just released their Q2 2013 Cross-Platform Report and some of the interesting, but not surprising findings is around the decline of optical disc usage due to increased usage of online streaming and purchasing. The graph below illustrates the decline.

Usage in Q2 2013 showed an 18% decline over Q3 2011. This is clear documentation of the decline in disk rentals and sales. DEG numbers show that disk sales fell 8.4% in 2012 and rentals declined 9%.

The performance of streaming video is the inverse of optical disc consumption. Over the period Q3 2011 to Q2 2013, usage increased 27%. While, Nielsen reports that watching online video plummeted in Q2, the data is not consistent with Comscore where they see the average online video viewer consuming nearly 23 hours a week in July, up 13% over the April figure.

Another interesting aspect of the report is the decline of the PC as a medium for viewing streaming digital content. PC Internet usage has declined from a peak in Q1 2012 of over 30 hours a month to 27.4 hours a month in Q2 2013. PC viewing is largely transitioning to watching video on a smart phone. This seems to grow as smart phones get bigger. Since Q3 2011, the average smart phone viewer has increased watching from 4.8 hours a month to 5.8, up over 20%.

I guess I don't fit into the demographics of the optical disc decline. I still watch all my movies from Blu-Ray and have yet to watch a movie streamed. What are you doing? Blu-ray? Streaming? Both?

So, if you connect your Ipad or MHL enabled phone to your TV...that doesn't count as "PC"...yet you aren't watching on a small screen either.

    Flawed survey.
