I'm a Pens fan, so the draft lottery was some high drama. I watched it live and was absolutely flipping out and calling every fellow fan I knew. I was very excited for the season just because there was going to be one. With Crosby now I'm beyond excited. I live in the D.C. area, but I'll be buying tickets to at least 6 home Saturday games starting with the home opener. I hope I can even get some to that game. It'll be like trying to get tickets for a Jimmy Buffett concert.
Being a fan of a small market team I'm very happy with the new CBA. It and of course Crosby can make the Pens playoff contenders as soon as this year. The free agent signing period will be very interesting. I assume the Pens will sign a veteran goalie, forward, and D. There are plenty of interesting names out there.
The shootout doesn't bother me too much since it's just in the regular season. The 1 pt. for a OT loss though is just stupid. The smaller goalie equipment and the obstruction rule enforcement are the big things.
NHL Center Ice will be worth every penny this year. Getting to watch Mario and Sidney 82 times will be fantastic. They'll probably both be on the Canadian Olympic team too. The Olympics should be great. Last time was phenomenal. So much to look forward to.
I think with the rule changes, you definitely should.
My man Pronger is the hot trade rumor right now. He's rumored to be going to either the Panthers, Thrashers, or maybe the Ducks. I'll be sad to see him go as a Blues fan, but if they can get some offense in return it might be worth it.
If Belfour gets bought out, the Wings will make a play for him.
I hear the Pens season tickets are selling very well now that they have the rights to Crosby.
Okay, the draft is in 12 hours! It will be streaming live at NHL.com for anyone to see. In the US it's gonna be possible to see it live as well. If you have Dish Network, these channels will have the draft coverage starting at noon (Eastern):
Instead, baseball ignored its juiced players after the strike, increasing the number of home runs being hit and ruining its record book.
Personally, I like most of the rules changes -- even the shootout. However, I thought the league had eliminated it's stupid rule of awarding a point to an overtime loser. It looks like that's not the case, as indicated above in this thread.
Since the shootout is only for regular season games, it shouldn't mess with game's tradition too much. After all, with 16 (and maybe soon 20) teams making the playoffs, just how important are regular season games anyway? This will make skilled players just that much more valuable than the clutch and grab guys on a roster.
No surprise on Goodenow leaving. I agree that without him, there may have been hockey last season. There is no way he was going to survive the mess he got the NHLPA into.
I still think that tie games should go into additional overtimes with one player less each period. IF it got down to one on one with no winner, the goalies play each other. THAT would be entertaining.
Looks like Foote's on his way to the Jaugernaut Bluejackets. Link Sad to see him go. Very tough defenseman that will be missed. He was very much a part of the the Av's/Red Wings rivaly that seems to be being diluted with the subtractions of players like Foote and McCarty. Can't blame Foote for taking the money, it should help him adjust to losing a lot easier. Looking on the brighter side, hopefully this makes it easier to try and sign Forsberg. There's talk around town here that they are trying to get both Forsberg and Naslund to come here, but I think thats a pipe dream. They would have to agree to play for far below what they could get elsewhere.
Also looks like the Philly scores two big D-men. Link
WEEI in Boston's Dale Arnold (also Bruins play-by-play anouncer) was just saying that Modano may be headed to the Bruins. Good signing if they can get him cheap, but I worry about his offensive drop last season. Maybe a good offensive guy turned defensive specialist in the Bobby Carpenter/Guy Lapointe mold.
Bruins come to terms with Glen Murray (4 years) and sign Shawn McEachern (2 years). Look to the Bruins to slightly up the offer to Joe Thornton, hoping that Joe bites now that they've signed his favorite setup target for 4 more years. Now if they can only give Murray a cojones transplant so he will actually get physical in the playoffs instead of disappearing due to the rough stuff (nahh, never happen). McEachern was a good fit here before (he should not have been let go), brings veteran leadership and a home town boy upside for probably cheap money.
Yzerman is a Wing for one more season. Holik is a Thrasher. Leafs pickup up Jason Allison. If they can sign Lindros, they'll have a nice concussion line-up.
"Adapt" meaning put a little physical pressure on Murray and he'd divert to the off angle side boards and stay there. Never saw a guy who could get open so often during the regular season fold so bad under the crashing and banging needed in the playoffs.
One of the quickest releases ever in the NHL, but what a (being blunt here) pansy. When they traded for him and Stumple, I told a friend of mine they should rename them the "Boston Blooms" because neither one would go in the corner to save their grandmother.
Modano is apparently staying in Dallas. Malik (RFA) just signed with NYR, freeing the Canucks of another $2M, which may pave the way for Neidermeyer's signing tomorrow.
It will be weird seeing Pavol out of a Blues uniform. He puts up great reg. season numbers, but disappears in the playoffs. I can't say I am unhappy with his depature.
