I'm hoping to put together a home theatre system, and I already had most of the components around the house already(DVD player, amplifier, speakers). The only thing is, I have no way of making these work together yet because my DVD player doesn't have an integrated Dolby Digital decoder. Can I buy just the decoder separately, (if so, what's worth getting?) or do I have to shell out the cash for a full blown receiver?

What you're looking for is a digital processor (sometimes referred to as a "pre/pro", as in "preamplifier/processor"). There are many such units available, including some that cost more than most receivers on the market. Some examples can be found in this thread.

For some ideas, try looking in the Receiver section for threads about "pre/pros" or "separates".
