looks like it'll run for about half the cost of the 2900 so this could be a sweet player for the budget minded. of course, who knows if we'll ever see it state side.

    Kevin,

The DVD-1400 WILL LIKELY BE AVAILABLE in North America come late September for the 1600's old price of $549.00. Meanwhile, the DVD-1200 has just been announced for $429.00, and is basically the old 1600 with a lower crossover (80hz) for DVD-A and Kodak CD picture capability. I don't know if the chipset will be the old FLI2200 or the newer FLI2300. The 1400 appears to be the 1600 with SACD enabled. I am not surprised that Denon is bringing out a cheaper Universal player than the 2900, as Pioneer has the 45a and now the even cheaper 563. Denon needs a Universal in the $500.00 region to compete with the Pioneers, and no other manufacturer has released a Universal player at this price-point other than Pioneer. If the 1400's video capability matches or exceeds the 1600's, then it may be more attractive to some buyers than the 2900 for nearly half the price. It will depend if you place more of an emphasis on video or audio, in which the 2900 will likely still be superior for audio.

Can you help me out and tell me how the Denon DVD910 compares to this? Does that component come in black.

that's the japanese release photo. it's not even here in america yet. odds are it will come in black. since i don't live in japan nor have knowledge if it's even been released in japan yet, i can't comment on it's performance against the dvd-910.

Kevin and Reggie, thanks for the info. I am looking forward to the '1200, as it could be the DVD-Audio player I finally buy for my second stereo system.

Www.denon.com has posted features for the '1200. A .pdf is also posted. Here is the brief list of features:

    Keith,

The lack of a coaxial output is again disappointing for a $429.00 player. It was bad when the 1600 was released early last year and its much worse now, especially since sub $75.00 players offer coaxial outputs. The 1200 must be based on another budget players design. Anyway, the 1400 is the one I'm curious about, and I'm even more curious about the 5900 as THIS IS LIKELY THE ONE I'M DEFINITELY GOING TO GET. Yes, I have decided to bypass the 2900 and go for "the big guy." If the rumors are true, we could expect a DVI input, HDCD, AL24 Processing. Digital Link for DVD-A/SACD, the most advanced Burr Brown DAC's available, and a Next Generation 216 mhz Silicon image chip. I sure hope this one is priced under 2K. If the 5900 does ship with these things, it will "probably" be the last major DVD player I buy until HD-DVD arrives in a few years.

BTW, My NAD T762 arrived on Saturday and it rocks!!!No wonder you and others use NAD amps in your stereo systems. The two channel on this unit is as good as it is on Pioneers 49TXi, especially when driving my 4ohm PSB Stratus minis (note: no more JBL N-26's). I use the Pioneer everyday at work, so this is based on first-hand observation. The 762 weighs about as much as a Denon 4802R and looks really classy for a $1300 receiver. It has, count em, two internal fans that I've yet to hear as some have reported with earlier production run models. My NAD dealer told me that NAD is quietly working on the flagship T772 which is supposed to have a firewire link, beefier amps and power supply, and a $2500 price tag. I won't be stepping up after the 762 though, my next stop when the time comes will be separates.

no news on the rumored upcoming 5900 but i did find this tidbit about a denon stand alone sacd player:

    http://denon.jp/company/release/dcdsa100.html

granted it's difficult to read but it looks like it says it will upsample cd to 24/352.8. kinda hefty at around 33 lbs. it's a little too rich for me at around $1675 for just sacd / cd. i'm waiting on the 5900 as well but i don't expect an msrp of $2000 or less. i figure if it has the aforementioned features, it'll push $3000 and up. only time will tell.

ReggieW - If you look at the pdf Denon has available and scroll to the bottom and take a look at the pic of the rear panel, it appears that the 1200 does indeed have digital coaxial out. It also mentions coaxial digital out under the "Audio Section" portion of the pdf. Manufacturers are well known for errors on their websites. Unfortunately IMHO, if you look at the feature set and both front and rear pics, the 1200 appears to be nothing more than a souped up 900/910. I guess we'll just have to wait and see what the DVD-1400 is all about when (or if) it makes it to the US.

Reggie, I too am disappointed that the '1200 will not have a coaxial digital input. However, I would be using it in stereo analog mode only in my second stereo system. I would consider the '1400 as well if I had any reason to believe it were a better audio component. I certainly wouldn't need it for SACD, as I have a Sony SCD-C333ES and 'C555ES in the same system.

If you get the '5900, I definitely want a report! It looks like a killer component.

Glad to hear you are enjoying the NAD receiver. I have no experience with their home-theater receivers, but I have read over and over again that they are top-notch with stereo music. That certainly doesn't surprise me.

I too tried the 900 and returned it because I thought the video on my Toshiba SD4800 was better. How can one tell if the 1200 will use the 900 or 1600 video hardware, or something else ?

Anthony, you may be right. Video is not a concern for me, as I am looking for a DVD-Audio player for my second stereo system (no TV). That said, I will look at the '1400, assuming it is released in the US too.

Hmmm... Wonder if the Denon 1400 will use the newer Faroudja FLI23xx, instead of the old chip, and use it more fully than other makers so far. The 1200 doesn't seem to from the site listing.
