As mentioned above:

Pete Yorn
Patty Griffin
Beth Orton
Damien Rice

I would also add:

Jason Falkner
Josh Rouse
Gemma Hayes (her new CD has been in heavy rotation on the CD changer!)

Most of these artists bore the pants off me, but I will suggest

Joe Henry (produced the Solomon Burke record from last year)

Death Cab For Cutie (amazing pop)

Crooked Fingers (ex-Archers of Loaf; like an even more wrenching Tom Waits)

Twilight Singers (the new band from ex-Afghan Whigs leader Greg Dulli-- tremendous)

I don't really care for The Thorns, but I love older Matthew Sweet, particularly "Girlfriend"

There have been several threads on this board about the Suitcase Pimps SACD "love is grand"...it is an amazing record. The best place to get it is on cdbaby.com although tower online carries it as well. Modern rock with a taste of the Kinks.

The Shins - Chutes to Narrow...probably the best thing i've heard all year.

Nick Drake - Pink Moon (older, but fits your tastes i think)
Eliott Smith - XO, Self Titled, Either/Or
Interpol - Turn on the Bright Lights
Bright Eyes - Lifted

I would reccomend kyle. mcmahon (www*kylemcmahon*com) replace the * with dots!

He's only 22, but he's excellent. He's sort of a cross between Sheryl Crow / Dave Matthews / The Eagles & Fleetwood Mac. Good good stuff! I can't wait to see what happens as he gets older!

Also check out Dashboard Confessional (www*dashboardconfessional*com)

MatS, I checked out Los Lonely Boys and you are correct, sir...they are excellent. It's refreshing to know that a new band is creating music like that. The members are all brothers, too, so they will probably stick together for a long time.

I second the recommendation of Gov't Mule... great stuff.

I'll second everything Mark Cappelletty listed, as well as David S' recommendation of Mojave 3.

Any new favorites, James? Were we right? ;)

A couple of bands I have been enjoying as of late is Kenna, a 80's sounding pop artist. Another band that I think have been around a long time is Modest Mouse. Its really hard for me to describe this style of music...its like a mellow guitar orientated alternative with a singer that has a really cool voice, a little rough around the edges but great rythms....it all comes together beauty.

Look for the singles Broke, 3rd Planet and Life Like weeds.

Good call on Kenna. Picked up the disc for something like $8 at Tower, was immediately a huge fan. Also, take a look at:

Interpol (NYC through The Smiths and JOy Division)

Sondre Lerch (More sophisticated and mature than Jason Mraz, a little less somber than Duncan Sheik)

Ben Folds (Another Singer-Songwriter)

Nick Drake (not exactly new, but still amazing. John Mayer's whole act is basically based on trying to copy him)

The Strokes (NYC Garage Rock at its finest)

Elefant

Broken Social Scene (Kind of like Widespread Panic merged with Coldplay, if you like that kind of thing)

Stars (Cranberries crossed with Joy Division)

The Flaming Lips (I think they kind of sound like Roxy
Music, but either way the make some beautiful sounds)

Rufus Wainwright (been around for a couple of years, I think of him as the Chelsea Elton John)

Aimee Mann (Simply Beautiful music)

Jeff Buckley (Late, Great singer songwriter)
