I'll second the classic cartoon recommendations. My son loves George of the Jungle, Looney Tunes, etc.

Also, while I know you're focusing on movies, there are also some older tv shows you might want to introduce him to at some point.

My son loves I Love Lucy, The Brady Bunch, The Partridge Family, The Twilight Zone, Home Improvement, MASH and others.

If he's into sci-fi & sorcery, you can't go wrong with "He-Man & The Masters Of The Universe" as a cartoon choice. That shows was a favorite of mine as a child of the 80's. Ditto for the "Masters of the Universe" movie starring Dolph Lundgren.

Great suggestion to which I would add, everythinig ever made by Pixar. :)

They simply have never made a bad film and most of them are instant classics. The Incredibles and Monsters, Inc. are probably my favorites.

And if your stepson likes The Goonies, try the lesser-known Explorers, a terrific film that inexplicably got lost at the box office and never found the audience it deserved, Two other overlooked films (which may have been mentione above, I didn't have time to read all the lists) while I'm thinking about them: The Rocketeer (he'll love it for the action, adventure and the cool rocket pack, you'll love it for Jennifer Connelly in white satin) and The Last Starfighter.

Regards,

Joe

There are so many good suggestions here that perhaps I missed them, but how about "The Yearling" and "Singin' in the Rain?" Kids I have shown "Singin' in the Rain" have loved it.

Trying not repeat any, here's some more. Saw a lot of these well before I as 9, so some might not be entirely age-appropriate. Some harder PGs are included as well as a stray PG-13s and Rs. A couple of these may be pretty difficult to find on Region 1 DVD, but I loved watching them on HBO as a kid.

You've already got one of my old favorites The Sea Gypsies (aka Shipwreck). You could try the other related films: The Wilderness Family and its sequels and Mountain Family Robinson. Most seem to be available rather cheaply on DVD.

Super Fuzz (aka Supersnooper). I know there are a bunch of versions of this film around, in various regions, but I don't know that there is an optimal version. Too bad.

a hodgepodge:
The Karate Kid
16 Candles
Rocky and sequels
Superman and sequels
American Flyers - another Steve Tesich biking script, PG-13
Victory
Streets of Fire
Somewhere in Time - you can sell him on the Richard Matheson connection
The Sea Wolf
The Crimson Pirate
The Flame and the Arrow
Stand By Me - an R
Roxanne
Empire of the Sun
D.A.R.Y.L.
Rear Window
North By Northwest - these would be good Hitchcocks to start with.
The Brother From Another Planet
Jeremy
A Little Romance
Cocoon - complete the Barrett Oliver cycle
Field of Dreams
Silverado - PG-13
The Buddy Holly Story
Starman
American Graffiti
Uptown Saturday Night
Car Wash
Silver Streak
The Bingo Long Traveling All-Stars & Motor Kings - more John Badham!
The Big Bus
The Gumball Rally
It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World
Young Frankenstein
High Anxiety
Blazing Saddles
Bringing Up Baby
Only Angels Have Wings
Gunga Din
Captains Courageous
David Copperfield
Stagecoach
The Prince of Central Park - '77 telefilm
Running Brave
One on One
Cool Hand Luke
The Sting
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
The Natural
Jeremiah Johnson
Big Wednesday - more Milius
Adam's Rib
Shane
Every Which Way But Loose
Smokey and the Bandit
Kelly's Heroes
The Lady Eve - a good intro to Sturges, I think
My Darling Clementine
High Noon
Pride of the Yankees
The Secret Life of Walter Mitty
The Court Jester
The Thin Man - the whole series
Beau Geste
Casablanca
The Maltese Falcon
The High and the Mighty
Hondo
Island in the Sky

more cartoons:
Beany and Cecil - there are several collections, I think
Watership Down
The Plague Dogs
The Secret of NIMH
The Last Unicorn

television:
Magnum, P.I. - my favorite as a kid

Have you guys got something against Disney's classic animated films? They seem to be decidedly absent on these lists. A viewing of the Disney classics is mandatory when it comes to animated film. I'm not going to recommend specific ones, because every classic Disney animated full length feature should be seen at least once.

*Shrug* Probably more a matter of Disney films on home video being such a childhood cliche that nobody felt the need to specifically mention them. Disney movies are a given. Also by age nine many kids have outgrown much of what would be considered "classic" Disney, whose audience sweet-spot seems to fall somewhere between toddlers and kindergarteners or first graders.

We're trying to suggest titles that might not have instantly come to the mind of any parent or step-parent. Disney would have.

Speaking of classics, I hope someone mentioned The Wizard of Oz. :)

Joe

How about some classic musicals?

Dr. Doolittle
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
The Sound of Music
(or any Rogers & Hammerstein film)

Or a new musical: Hairspray :emoji_thumbsup:

Also, I'd recommend:

Stardust
Hocus Pocus
Big Business

Marx Brothers comedies
The Muppets! (The Muppet Show & all movies)

Heh, I was going to recommend the Critters series, then recalled at least one of them contains some nudity...but then I see it's already on your list of movies watched anyway. :D

Some television:

Due South
Eerie, Indiana
Mr. Bean
Invader ZIM

I will reiterate the Back to the Future trilogy.

And, check out any of the comic book movies of recent years (well, obviously taking rating and content into account). Or even the Adam West Batman movie.

Well, I can understand the reasoning in the first two lines of your post. As for the next part about toddlers and first graders, all I can say is

I'm going to recommend a few Japanese animated films

METROPOLIS
PORCO ROSSO
NAUSICAA IN THE VALLEY OF THE WIND
THE CAT RETURNS
APPLESEED

Great suggestions here Jon, very cool. I may bump Streets Of Fire up to next in line, that one is a lot of fun...

Also liked the Bugsy Malone suggested, have a dvd of that ready to rotate in...

KARATE KID!!!

Also, the library now has A-Team videos and MacGyver!! We've also liked introducing him to the Rocky movies. I came on here looking for "movies to show my 9 year old boy" and saw this link. I got a lot of great answers from your questions!! Sorry I'm 2 years late but maybe now you've run out of movies.... ;)

While the lists are great, so many have titles I'd prefer to wait a bit before I show a kid.. 9 is still in that realm where I want them to be a kid. And there are so many "kid" movies out there that are great that they will love. Having a 9 year old myself (and 11) here are some of the ones that are real hits you can enjoy together

The Muppet Movie

The Muppets Take Manhattan

The Iron Giant

N.I.M.H.

Sword In the Stone (this is one of my kid's favorites, a disney classic)

Jungle Book (Original Animated)

Explorers as mentioned above is a good one.

Matilda

Benji

Snoopy films.. all of them..

And maybe it's me, but uh, I steadfast refused to show my kids movies with "real" violence. I just won't do it. I have nothing against them watching that later, but under 10? No way. No way at all. I know they will get it elsewhere, through the net or whatever, but I don't care for it and won't do it. It's why I don't mind things where the gunbattles etc. are ridiculous because that's fine. But I won't put them in front of anything where the blood/gore factor goes up.I could deal with sex scenes in a film way more then blood/gore.
