I thought it was generally accepted that, other than sharing a title and taking place in a cave, the movie and book were not related at all. Long got no credit or money, did he?

Nope, Don't think Long got anything out of this. Guess this is more of a case of stealing a premise and twisting it. All Marshall had to do was replace the expedition with a few woman. Don't know if you saw it, but at one point they did find supplies left over from an expedition that previously had been in the cave so maybe this was a sequal to a novel that never had a movie of it's own?

The same event happened in "The Cave." In fact, "The Cave" and "The Descent" are nearly carbon copies, plot-wise. Some of the characters and motivations are different, but they're not far apart.
