Dunno about the bitrate, but there's certainly no need for DD-2.0 encoding when one can simply select "phantom" mode to split it out to two channels. I find the center channel (1.0) solution to be best, as two-channel mono tends to sound slightly smeared and can create effects sorta like "lobing" (I'm not sure how to describe this... different frequency responses depending on where the listener is located).
But Mattias cuts directly to the chase: a mono soundtrack (or stereo one, for that matter) should be presented in full-blooded PCM as there is no reason why a lossy compression encoding scheme is needed. Or maybe I'm presuming too much... is there any reason why a mono or stereo soundtrack needs to be encoded in dolby digital?
