The nomination, seconding and thirding process is CLOSED.
The LEAD character tourney is in this thread.
The SUPPORTING character tourney is in this thread.
========================
From original post:
Inspired by Dome's earlier thread, and Ron's review of The King of Comedy talking about Rupert Pupkin, I decided to do a movie character tourney. I'm sure it's been done before, perhaps several times, but, hey, why not?
I'm just looking for interesting characters, Lead or Supporting. What's the line...there are no small characters, only small actors? Sometimes a character can make an impression with just a quick cameo. I'm thinking the difference between, say, the Oracle in The Matrix and Neo in The Matrix. To pit one against the other doesn't seem quite fair. The Lead and Supporting categories will be separate, with separate voting.
The line between Lead and Supporting can be a fine one, and I wouldn't expect anyone to time appearances with a stopwatch. Use your own judgment. I'll put them into whatever category you say. I know that sometimes a character who appears only briefly can be the most important character in the film, but I'd still put those in "Supporting."
Sometimes, an inanimate object can be a major character too. I'll accept things like the briefcase in Pulp Fiction (would be Supporting, since you only see it a few short times) or the Ring in LOTR:FOTR (would be Lead, since it's shown several times, and well, there's the title and all).
This tourney isn't really about the actors who play the role. If the character is a good one, it's due to the skills of the actor, the writer and the director (and sometimes the editor), but this isn't a tourney about those people, just the characters themselves. Still, it can be helpful, especially in the Supporting category, to visualize the character, so PLEASE PROVIDE THE ACTOR'S NAME. Quotes from the character or a short description are MORE than welcome and will be used once the tourney starts.
Please give nominations roughly in this format:
Category (Lead or Supporting) - Name of character (Movie title) - Name of actor. Quote or description of character if possible.
For instance,
Lead:
Neo (The Matrix) - Keanu Reeves - "I know Kung-Fu"
Supporting:
The Oracle (The Matrix) - Gloria Foster - "You're cuter than I thought. I can see why she likes you."
I'll keep a running list as I update, so scroll down to see the most recent, then make note of posts after that to see who's been nominated but not added yet. I'll post a list of complete nominees here before voting.
If you post something and then go back and edit your post to add or change something, I WILL NOT SEE THE CHANGE. You must post again. I get the thread via e-mail and work from that. I only visit the thread itself to post, and I rarely go back and look over what's been posted. I've already seen it in e-mail. Post again with your changes, or accept that your changes will not be acknowledged. Sorry, thanks.

As I said, use your own judgement. I am splitting them as I add them to my worksheet so I won't have to do it later, so I'll put them in whatever category you folks say. Just specify, that's all. I'll put both of these in "big."

Ok, I've definitely decided to split the categories.

To give the little folks a chance to shine, I'm giving 5 more nominations for small roles.

So, 5 nominations for big roles, 5 more nominations for small roles.

SteveGon, one of your nominations was for a small role, so take one more Big nom, and 4 Small.

Rosebud is fine!

Bill, thank you for posting again. As usual, I'm getting replies via email and am only coming to the thread to post, so I don't see edits.

Steeve, VERY COOL! Your quotes brought those characters to mind immediately. I wish more people would do that, especially in the small categories (hint hint).

The list so far: (edited and moved down)
