Syracuse University announced yesterday their teams will no longer be known as the Orangemen and Orangewomen. From now on all of SU's teams, male and female, will be known simply as the Syracuse Orange. Bad idea, I think. Thoughts?

Why not just the "Protestant Irish"? That's gender non-specific.

I'm not a sports fan but it "The Orange" sure sounds catchy. I like it. Orangemen and Orangewoman? Pretty exhausting and sounds like a vocal group my grandpa likes.

Besides all the good mascots are taken....

We alumni of UCSC are at least proud to be the "Fighting Banana Slugs".

I personally suggest the Syracuse Crack-Whores and the Syracuse Homosexual-German-Cannibal-Chefs, but appearantly just "Orange" is good enough for some people. [IMG]

Similarly humorous, one of the local JC's (Scottsdale Community College) mascot is the artichoke .

"Our mascot was born in 1972 as a result of a philosophical difference between students and school administrators. Student government ran an election to name a mascot, and in protest, surprised and shocked the administration by declaring the "artichoke" as the mascot."

They have for years been referred to as the "Orange" for years by lazy broadcasters. No big deal.

This is completely unfair to the colors red, green, blue, yellow and purple. [IMG]

    On a more serious note:

When I was attending UMass at Amherst, there was a serious movement to get the Minuteman removed as the school mascot. I believe it was referred to as a 'Gun-toting, white male' by the opposition. I once suggested changing our mascot to the UMass Happy Flowers, but it was thought that it would be too exclusionary (what about all of the unhappy flowers?).

Now, changing from Orangemen to the Orange, I can somewhat understand.. not really about PC (because it doesn't change the moniker) just about space, and probably marketing new uniforms..

But change "The Minutemen" ? That's one of the better mascots in the US. Next thing you know, someone at Notre Dame will want to change "The Fighting Irish" [IMG]
