For those who complain about the current state of documentaries as untruthful, manipulated and/or biased propaganda, the cinema verite documentaries of Frederick Wiseman are what you should be watching.
No interviews, no narration, no 'issues', no editing within scenes...just straight forward fly-on-the-wall examinations of various institutions, those who run them and those who are affected by them.

Wiseman's camera appears to be of the invisible variety, no one seems to be aware of the camera filming them, this allows for some brutally honest scenes and some very disturbing on-camera behavior (the banned for 23 years Titicut Follies being the most notorious).

As dull as these films may sound, they are enormously engaging and emotionally powerful...a clear-eyed look at the world we live in.

Unfortunately, Mr. Wiseman has refused to allow any of his films to be released on video. Film festivals, institutional screenings and public television are the only current venues for accessing his films.
They are well worth seeking out.

Well, that would explain why I haven't seen any. Have heard of him, though.
