Who cares what Leo thinks. I have yet to see any film with him credited as a director. I saw the trailer and I think it is pretty hard to judge a movies quality from that. About the only problem I could see in that trailer is that Leo is in it.

Didn't Harrison Ford bad mouth Bladerunner? I have way more respect for Ford than for DiCaprio, and I still love Bladerunner, no matter what the star says.
Why don't we all wait and see the film before we start praising/trashing it?

Where's the fun in that?

I agree with Matt, it's a mystery how anyone would be willing to invest $100M in this movie, with Scorsese at the helm. His movies usually don't even make half of that.
It doesn't seem very interesting either.
I loved "Casino" and "Bringing out the dead" but Scorsese also makes dreck (IMO) like "Age of innocence" and "Kundun", so he's rather unreliable, IMO. I won't be seeing "Gangs of NY" in the theater.

I was interested in GANGS OF NEW YORK until I saw the trailer, which made the movie look slow, somewhat dull and reminiscent of Scorsese's AGE OF INNOCENCE with that arty costume-drama look, and I lost the immediate urge to see the film in a theater.
I had a different reaction to the trailer. Sure, there were lavish costumes, but the tone of the film as presented in the trailer seems almost like MTV-meets-Opera. Loud and explosive with fighting, macho posturing, and wild camera angles. No one involved with Gangs of New York would get me into the theater on name alone, but I really want to see it based on what I have seen and know about it so far. I hear the fights even feature bizarre bladed weapons like from a kung fu movie or something.

Where in that link does Leo "trash" Gangs Of New York?
According to that story, he is trying to re-negotiate his contract, while another source (?) claims he is bad mouthing the film.
Until I see a direct quote from Mr. Di Caprio actually "trashing" the film, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and take that story as heresay.

According to an item in yesterday's New York Times, Scorsese has confirmed that Gangs will be postponed until 2002.

It's now official, Miramax has pulled "Gangs of New York" from it's original December release date and moved to an unconfirmed opening date next spring. Ironically, this means that Miramax and DreamWorks will renew their little rivalry as DreamWorks will now keep their gangland film "The Road to Perdition" in it's spring launch date.
DreamWorks had been toying with the idea of moving 'Perdition' up to make it eligible for Oscar consideration, but since it's such a violent film (and the fact that director Sam Mendes wanted more time to tweak it) they decided to keep it in it's originally planned March opening date.
Now that both films won't be eligible for the Oscars, that boads well for smaller films like "Memento", "The Royal Tenenbaums", and "The Shipping News" to get more recognition.

He thought on homeland, the big timber, the air thin and chill all the year long. Tulip poplars so big through the trunk they put you in mind of locomotives set on end. He thought of getting home and building him a cabin on Cold Mountain so high that not a soul but the nighthawks passing across the clouds in autumn could hear his sad cry. Of living a life so quiet he would not need ears. And if Ada would go with him, there might be the hope, so far off in the distance he did not even really see it, that in time his despair might be honed off to a point so fine and thin that it would be nearly the same as vanishing.

I am a HUGE Scorsese fan and he is my FAVORITE director ... BUT ... I do agree with some of you that GONY looks a little AGE OF INNOCENCE and less gangster.
The trailer did not get me excited at all, and the set looked too much like ... a SET! I am not buying this flick for some reason.
The reality of the situation is that Scorsese can pretty much get away with anything he wants because of the body of his work not because of the money he brings in at the box-office. Also I guarantee you that when the film will be released it will be HIS cut not Miramax's.
He is one of the few that can make a movie HE wants for $100 mil.
Anxiously awaiting for DINO ...
